Default The mystery around my 993 Turbo.

Hello everyone! I need your help with my car. I've owned this car for the past 20 years and a few friends told me that this car was part of small run of regular Turbos that went through the Exclusiv program in early 1996. Basically, the car is spec'd as a Turbo S, before it was offered to the public. Another friend confirmed that, but told me the only way to identify these cars is with the code stamped in the engine, that should be an M64/60R, which it has. Regular Turbo's did not have the ''R'' suffix, while the Turbo S had an ''S'' suffix.

I have a 993 GT2, and it also has the ''R'' suffix in the engine stamp.

Thanks!

This sounds like a future "sleuthing" article for 000 Magazine!

I also owned a 96 turbo with the R stamped on the engine, I think the 1996 X50 is the power option that was on 97/98 turbo S. If the ECU part number ends with 83 means the 430hp power package or ending with 85 for 97/98 turbo S/GT2 450hp, also the secondary small oil cooler below the front bumpers is a give away on 96 turbo with the power package.

Also check the doors and hood with a magnet to see if they are aluminum, mine was but unfortunately I total the car but managed to salvaged the engine/tranny/doors and build myself a GT2 tribute out of a C4S chassis.

Hi Colaiuta,
My background includes being with a tier-1 automotive supplier.
It does not surprise me that you received a stealth engine upgrade. In an automotive assembly production environment, any hiccups in the supply chain have to be addressed or there are large costs of holding up the line. If there is an engine shortage and there are a few extra "R" spec. engines available in-house, they will go into production to fill the void. The rationale is that it meets the need to keep the line productive and the customers certainly are not going to complain.

With a filled option tag like Coliaiuta car it was deliberately set aside the production line and not for lack of parts in my opinion, special wishes.

M64/60R = GT2 version. So it is likely that as part of this Exclusiv programme, your car received this motor instead of the normal M64/60 and before the M64/60S was yet a thing.

I agree with BoomBoom...having managed auto plants in the past, there is no way a performance engine is being subbed when there is a parts shortage. The car wouldn't have been scheduled in the first place and if there was some sort of mishap, it would be taken from the line.

Colaluta... I can't help you answer the mystery.... but the stable of Porsches you own is absolutely amazing. Nicely done.

All M64/60 engines including the R or S are the same mechanically from 96 to 98, only the ECU's and turbo's changes, same cams, valves sizes, displacement, compression ratio, exhaust, everything is the same. The factory never did changes on the M64/60 engines from day one on the 993 turbo, turbo S or street GT2. The ECU programs were different with K24 turbo's, nothing else.

So at the end of the day there's no mystery, just another 1996 993 pre turbo S with 430hp.

Thanks for posting up the infos on your cars. I also have a stamp S after engine model number. Yours as others have pointed out is the X50. It is the code that gets the R on the engine case. Thank you for also posting that the GT2 has an R on it. That info is harder to come by as most are safely tucked away from the public. Your second friend is not quite correct, the R on the case is not the only way to tell. If you run the VIN like someone kindly did above it will show it. X50 also appears on the option sticker code you posted which unfortunately are not always still on the cars 25 y later. The fact yours has all three, the VIN, sticker and engine stamp is a nice bonus. I bought the book Porsche 911 turbo AIR-COOLED YEARS by Gabriel-Franz, who, given access to the Porsche Achieves, tabulated among other infos all factory powerkit cars by country which is quite interesting. I looked yours up and sure enough your vin is in there listed a 1 of 3 cars with X50 powerkit delivered originally to Oman in 1996. It was believed and written on this site that no base turbos with X50 (not including turboS cars) were delivered to the US but I have found this not to be true. One came for sale last year and indeed 11 X50s had us VINs. I started a thread in the turbo page to try and collect info on them. How about a pic of this 993 and or the GT2

Do you know how many HP out of 1996 X50 turbo cars? I believe only 97/98 X50 power kit with 450hp.
