Default Maintenance required on a 20,000 mile 993

I’m considering a 993 that is a one owner, 20,000 mile car. Nothing has ever really been done to the car with the exception of tires, batteries, oil changes and brake flushes. I’m thinking it needs a 30,000 mile service at a minimum and anything else that the PPI uncovers. Your thoughts?

If my car I would replace all the belts. I would do the spark plugs too even though that’s at the 30k service interval. New shocks too if original. Air filter, cabin filters as well. Also would add a Fister Exhaust and Fabspeed 200 cell X Pipe…. then it’s a slippery slope from here

Sounds like a great find and knowing most fluids were done regularly, that's a plus.

If it were me, I'd do the following:
Oil if not recent
Brake flush (and slave cylinder)
Trans axle oil. Even though it's low mileage, 25+ yrs is a long time .
Air filter
Pollen filters
Belts as gbos mentioned
Fuel filter
Check power steering fluid
Check the spark plug wires for cracking from age
Start putting some miles and smiles on.

Check valve cover gaskets for leaks as they may have dried out and cracked.

It's always good to baseline any new to you car with a full consumable change. All fluids, filters, plugs, batteries, etc....

20k miles, it's probably on its original DME. Grab a replacement and throw in the glove box.

Enjoy!

I think the crew covered it.

I’d add motor mounts to the list. And the rubber in the suspension (front control arm bushings, etc)..

I thought he had it covered when I looked at his signature.

Thanks guys! My experience has been that low mile cars with at least a couple of owners are better maintained than one owner cars. The last 2 cars that I have looked at have had 20 plus year owners and the cars haven’t travelled much in the past 8-10 years. Consequently, not much maintenance has been done and I’d want to take care of that right away. So…fluids, filters, brake flush, belts, plugs, tires, battery, stone guards, paint correction and maybe motor mounts and a new dime at a minimum on this one plus whatever pops up in an inspection. That’s an easy $5-$7k!

Wasn’t there a recall or issue with steering rack on certain years? And if you went to 18” wheels from stock 17”, you had to “upgrade” the steering rack?

Sorry - I don’t recall details and I’m certain the brain trust here will know what I’m referencing and clarify.

Best of luck with your next 993! Enjoy in good health!

Steering rack support/brace is what you're looking for. Correct on requirement for 17 to 18s. I think targas had a brace requirement regardless of size.

Overhaul of Dual Distributor or at least inspect the small internal belt

There was Tech Bulletin 9604 that addressed that issue. No recall that I am aware of,

Thanks guys. Haven't committed to a purchase yet, still doing my due diligence. If anyone has a nice 993 that they are thinking of selling, please let me know!
