Odometer Question?
How could the trip meter stop working, yet the odometer still works? I thought these were driven by the same 2 small gears?

A small tooth will have broken off from the gear that drives the odometer. The gear(s) driving the trip will be intact. Common problem and relatively simple repair.

Thanks! I assumed that if one broke they both became inoperable.

Burning Brakes
Mine broke a couple years back, I bought a new gear from Odometer Gears but for some reason when I got it all back together it still wouldn't function. I consider myself to be reasonable competent mechanically... I had done it on my 944 with no issues. No idea what I did wrong (maybe bought the wrong gear? not sure) but I ended up sending it to North Hollywood Speedometer Repair and they fix it up really nicely. I'd use them again in a heartbeat.

Thanks guys. I think I might change the gears as a preventative measure on my next 993.

It is common for the surgery to not work on the first try. Loose bits of the old gear or not getting the new gear engaged just right (even though it seemed to go together just fine) can cause it to not work or work for just a few miles. Taking it back apart (now you know how) and picking out the new gear and putting it back like you think you did the first time and voila! it works. It happened to me and I still do not know what I did different but it works perfect. For those getting ready to do this kitchen table project, when you put it back together, do not push the odo gauge fully into the dash until a successful road test because you may be pulling it back out. Also check the bulbs in the gauge and replace any that are burned out "while you are in there".

No issues doing the E24 but my 993 wouldn't work after replacing the odometer gears and removing the broken teeth. I took it apart two more times and couldn't see anything wrong. Finally, I pushed in the reset stem and slid my finger off the side, letting it pop out. That was eight years ago. It's worked perfectly ever since.
