Not a big fan of chrome wheels, but if they work for you, go for it!

I just put 17" chrome turbos on my Cab and love the look. I didn't know if I would when I got them, but figured that since Bentley used chrome wheels on a car I parked next to, it wouldn't "cheapen" the cars look. No pics to share yet but I really like the look. Having said that there was a tech Q & A in either Pano or Excellance not too long ago where the responder did not recommend chrome and said Porsche had some difficulty with chipping. That obviously didn't hold me back.

Good luck with your decision.

porschewheelguy has been selling these sets for $1750 for months. Guess now that he's down to his last couple sets, he's bumping the price. It'll be interesting to see if he gets it. He was the successful bidder on a number of these sets early this year at prices in the $1300 - $1500 range from porsche new car dealers.

If they are factory wheels, then they are NOT chromed. They are painted. Porsche did a pretty decent job with painting the wheels to appear chrome, but they are not as shiny as chrome.

How is the durability? Anyone have pictures of these wheels installed?

As Jeff stated, Part # 000 044 600 27 is a set of Turbo Look I wheels and Conti tires as installed on the 2000 Millennium Carrera 4. These wheels are not chromed, but they are painted using a special high gloss paint which is almost impossible to match. The same finish was used to paint the 40th anniversary 911 wheels.

My car came from the factory with 18" hollow spoke twist wheels. My understanding is that the chrome finish was done after the car arrived at the dealer. My wheels don't look painted, but others who have seen them can chime in with their opinion. That would be very surprising. My wheels are seven years old, 94K miles and show no sign of wear or flaking other that the curb rash applied by the PO.

Guys,

There was a thread a few months ago regarding the advisability of chrome plating an alloy wheel. Following is a comment that I posted on that thread:

"The warning that you received re chroming an aluminum alloy wheel may have been for corrosion, but what they really are talking about is hydrogen embrittlement.

Aluminum alloys are vulnerable to cracking when exposed to conditions that inject hydrogen into the component. The chrome plating of aluminum is such a process. The addition of hydrogen into the metal can reduce the ductility and load-bearing capacity of the component, in this case the alloy wheel. Not all metals are equally subject to this condition. It is most likely to show up in high strength steels, titanium alloys and aluminum alloys.

In the aviation industry the chrome plating of propeller spinners (aluminum alloy) is banned for this reason. These have been cases where a shiny, chromed spinner has failed in flight and the failure traced back to hydrogen embrittlement.

Admittedly an aircraft spinner is much thinner and more fragile than the robust wheels on our cars. But, this is certainly a case for painting or powder coating."

Search the old threads posted by Jeff993TT for disturbing pics of his chromed hollow twists. My 98 cab also had these on and since I wasn't fond of the look I traded them in for my Gemballas. With the curb rash them and the issue above, I thought I was pretty lucky to get $1k for them.

Fred - you should really take a look at Jeff's post....may prevent a disaster on a future Malibu run...

David,

For a car that I thought was pretty much perfect when I got it, there is no end to the opportunity to make it more perfect.

Thanks for the concern and the suggestion. Wheels are on my long term mod list. When does a mod become a necessity?

Fred, I hope you had the good sense to upgrade to big reds when you had that abs pump work done!

Here's a link to some pics of my damaged hollow spoke wheels:

http://www.cuberootconsulting.com/gallery/album43

They were hollow spoke wheels that were chromed. Bascially threw the entire set away.
