Default question to all wheel/tire experts

I just had the evo uprights/tie rods installed on my car. During the process I also changed to new tires - Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 245 front/ 285 rear. I used to have Michelin PS 225/285. The guys at the alignment place are now telling that the tires are rubbing all over. I am confused. I didn't have rubbing issues before and thought that the 245 front would be fine (based on previous searches of the forum). I am wondering if it could be possible that the alignment or evo upright installation could be the issue. Did I just make a huge mistake? Any help would be appreciated.

Alex,
Is John Wright doing the work?
Did they change your alignment settings? Sometimes when you lower a car you may need to dial a bit more negative camber into the suspension. The Evo uprights would not have caused this issue. Also 245's should fit fine unless this tire is much wider than other 245's. BTW what is the aspect ratio on these tires?

Where is it rubbing? If on the body it might just require rolling the fenders, not a huge deal if they know what they are doing.

I'm not sure which threads you've read regarding 245's fitting OK on our cars. I posted one a while ago stating that 245's on my car rubbed the inner wheel well panels on both sides if the steering wheel was fully cranked to either side while driving slow. Turning and hitting a bump made it much worse. 245's are definitely not the tire of choice especially with a lowered vehicle. I went back to 225's and have been happy ever since.

Not all tires are the same widths even if they are the same "size". Could be that the Goodyears are wider than the Michelins. I'm not an expert though.

Alex,

Greg F. made a valid point about more camber,it does help the larger tire fit. Also what offsets are you using and where is it rubbing, inside or out? You should be fine if the offsets are correct.

FWIW, I'm putting 265/35/18 MPSC's on my front end tonight. We measured and played with different BBS centers and outers to get it right. Rim width is 9-1/2 and it should work just fine, I'll report back in the morning. I also have the EVO uprights...

JrSr:

They'll fit, if you got the offsets right. I ran 265f and 315r on my C4S (with rolled fenders) and they never rubbed. Car was really low too.

Some 255/40X17 in rear rub for me; some don't. I get this just with my Mille Miglia track wheels, which are offset more to the outside than the stock Porsche "Cup" wheels I use on the street.

At one point I considered getting Goodyear F1s but their shoulders were much more square than the S02s that I eventually went with, and their effective profile was much wider - the 265 F1 was about the same width as the 285 SO2. I was unable to run a 285 F1 on my 11" rim w/o rubbing. This was the older F1 since this was a few years back...I'm not sure how much the profile has changed since then.

Thanks for the advice! Greg, I am using an alignment shop up here in Dayton. They are trying to do a couple things with the alignment - I will update the saga later today.

Just wondering why you've chosen to run such a large tire up front when others have reported problems with that particular size ? Are you trying to give the car more understeer ? It's my understanding that most people try to reduce the amount of understeer already designed into the 993...

Cooter,
You need to rethink what you are saying. More grip up front does not create more understeer but less. Understeer is when the front has less grip than the rear.
There are no issues with the tires, but sometime the offsets are not ideal for running the slightly larger tire. I have had 275's on the front of my car but the margin of error was credit card thin.

No problem.
Here is a nice chart (cheat sheet) from Steve at Rennsport Systems on this page.

Thanks Greg, yeah, I first spoke to Steve and saw his site about a year ago when I sent him my dizzy for a rebuild...That chart is a great resource, as is Steve.
Guess I just misread Alex's post (and subsequent brainfart)...
