Default Sound of 993 C4

Dear All,

I am on the market for a 993.
I am a previous owner of a 964 C4 and am very sensitive to the sound of the engine. After trying a 996 ph 2 I was a bit disappointed with the sound of the engine and went on to trying 993s.
I test drived 2 cars in a one week period.
1. 993 C2 , 1994, 272 hp, Cabriolet.
Brilliant ! Sound very similar to my 964.
The car was driven roof closed.
Great handling and agility.
2. 993 C4, 1995, 272 hp, Coupé.
Well, could not believe my ears.
Sounded like a 996 ph2.....

Is this normal ?
Does the cabrio have more sound, even closed ?
Should the coupé sound more like a 996 ph2?
Does any of you have sound samples ?
Tell me everything !

Ideally I would like a coupé.
What is the best solution to get the noise back ?
(I would prefer Porsche approved parts)...

Cheers.

What is a "996 ph2"?

The engines and exhaust systems for those two cars are identical, and they will sound the same on the outside. From the inside it will of course differ due to the difference in sound insulation.

There are many options available to you if you want to increase the sound of these cars. Search the archives and you will find many threads.

Dear Graham,

Thks for your answer.
A 996 ph2 is a 996 phase 2, with the 3,6 engine.
Cheers.

gdbz,

Do you know if either of the 993s you drove were equipped with the "motor sound" option? The option includes a different air box cover with holes that lets out more sound and possibly, different mufflers. Someone may correct me on the mufflers. I don't know how much difference there is between the two. My car has it and its been quite a while since I've driven another 993.

Dear swmic,

In Europe, the motorsound option includes airbox+pipes only, not mufflers.
So maybe the cab had the motorsound, but I do not think it is the one you have.
I am actually interested to know whether this european version of the motorsound option actuallt brings any value, or if one should go for the RSR mufflers right away ? Or both ?
Cheers.
Gdbz.

I can tell you as many others can that just putting some holes in the airbox will add significant (wonderful) sounds. Can't speak for the muffler/tips mods but that airbox alone can really change things. Sounds (no pun) like the cab you drove probably had the motorsound package and the coupe did not.

My cab had motorsound and it seemed great for the first couple of hundred miles. Now I've got a air box that looks like a Fabspeed and Maxflows. On some short drives I wish for more sound, but if going for more than 45 minutes, I have to say "uncle".

I'm surprised to hear that. My stock exhaust 993 sounds WAY better then my stock exhaust 964 did. Compaired to the 993 my 964 sounded like a Honda Accord.

having owned both the cabrio and the coupe I can tell you that the cabrio in stock form is noiser inside than the coupe. Especially when the top is down there is no comparison. With the cabrio you get all the glorious soundtrack of the aircooled engine. I sometimes find myself like a little kid grinning silly lifting the throttle off high rpm just to hear the exhaust gargle
Of course there are different options on the exhaust with the best sound for my cabrio from the RSR mufflers and a tottaly different sound with the supercups on my coupe. I must admit that I actually like better the cabrio sound with the RSR's with the top down cruising

Accelerating through a tunnel is another of my favorites. More mundane is slowly driving through a parking garage looking for a spot - funny about those car alarms

I guess all cars are a bit different. My stock 964 was much more throaty than my stock 993 - both C4 cabs. Even my 5 year old commented that my "Porsche doesn't sound like a Porsche". Drilling the airbox helps a bit, but a new exhaust is in order for me.

Didn't the engine tray start with the 993 (because of Swiss drive-by laws or something)? ...and the 964 doesn't have one?

I haven't removed mine but have seen comments on this forum that suggest it helps with amplifying the engine sound.

I think there's a good chance that the two 993's had different exxhausts. If you want sparkling noise, buy a set of Fabspeed Supercups.
