Cool 993 Steering Rack Rebuilt Kit.

Does anyone know where I can find a kit (DIY to get rid of a leak). PAG doesn't sell them! There are some rebuilt Steering Racks for purchase but I need the kit part to do it myself (save $$$).

TIA for your help!

Frank,

KLA makes a steering rack rebuild kit. Have not used it, but I do have one of their strut bars.

Good luck

I investigated this some months back. I thought I had a leak on first look but then I didn't

But... I found a 964 RS power steering rack (18.5 to 1 ratio) at van zweeden in NL. It was a used component around Euros 600 but it would give you much quicker steering yet maintain the power. This is one option. My other option was through Gert at Euros 1800 or so (RS rack)

Second option: I think Graham Mitchell bought a reseal kit somewhere... see if he pipes in??

Late edit: I also got a good quote from Sunset Imports. Would have bought for the spare bin but they would not take my CC.

Good luck

my rack went recently. i toyed with the idea of getting re-seal kit, or a refurbished rack. in the end i bought a new one ($1000). for the extra $ you get a 2 year warranty; apparently these racks fail pretty often and i put about 20k miles a year on my car (i have heard of these racks failing in as few as 30k miles).

I have been lucky with mine at 76k, but my mechanic told me that he has seen them come leaking like a &(*(*. He said it is common. I want mine to stay unknown....1500.0 installed.

"1500.0 installed"
did that include the alignment?

Along the same lines, does someone know the different ratios of the various steering racks that will fit in a 993? As I recall, there is a manual, close-ratio one in the mix that works great. Isn't a 964 rack compatible and a tighter ratio?

Tom - I'm aware of 3 options that fit a 993:

1. Stock 993 - slow and power assisted

2. 993 RS = 964 (standard) - faster and power assisted

3. 964 RS (America) - faster and manual

When my steering pump failed the steering was really heavy...impossible to parallel park easily. I wouldn't go for a manual rack in these cars if they'd feel like a power rack with no pressure (which I assume they would). The feel was _much heavier_ than the manual steering in other, older 911's I'd owned or driven.

I have the 993 RS Steering Rack on my car and feel reassured that the KLA Industries re-seal kit will be fine to use. I ordered it and will let you guys know what my friend Bob and I think.

BTW, Bob will be doing most of the work (he is a Porsche Factory Trained Mechanic)!

What a case of good German Beer can buy now a days is remarkable!

I replaced my rack a few years ago, and then 18 mos later. Good thing they have a two year warranty
