Default Strangers have asked me lately:"Uh, is that the new Porsche?" pointing to my 993!

They've seen the 997 in pics, they've seen it in their Car and Driver mags, they've seen some on the road here in town, and when they see me pull up many have said - "So that's the new car, huh? How does it ride?" I tell them that it's 10 years old and sit there stunned... "But I thought the new one has those round headlamps?"

Doh!

Has this happened to you? Just today I brought my car to Battery Warehouse on Rockville Pk in Rockville, MD and the guy looks out at the 993 and says, nice 997! I say, "Uh, what? That car? That's a 993 from 1996." He looks closer at it and seems shocked that he guessed wrong. He eventually concedes, "Oh yeah, I guess 1994 was the first year they used those round lights like that, then brought them back for the newest model". I was surprised that a retail worker at Battery Warehouse would know all that! I said, "Yeah, that's actually true, as they started building the 993's in 1994 for the 1995 model year." He looked at me like I was dumb, and just added "Right, just like I said".

Some people are surprisingly knowledgable about these cars! Actually, I guess these specific round style headlights really started in 86 with the 959, right?

I don't know any non-Porsche owners who have any clue about the differences between the different 911 variants. In fact a couple of weeks ago, when I was cleaning mine in the driveway, a guy in a very nice 996 stopped and asked "that's a 993?".

Most people just lump the 993 together with all the exotic high performance cars that regular people would never own, I reckon.

Once I was, in the supermarket's parking lot, about to get in my 356 when a guy passed by and said: "They really know how to make nice cars in France..." and I said: Yeah...cheese and champagne as well!

Careful - if your 993 hears that too many times, it will start dripping oil through its RMS.

even over here in germany I have been asked if that's the new 911. One guy said "I did not know that you can already buy the new turbo..."

But it only happens when I just waxed the car :-)

I think the round headlights actually the whole front is a lot like the front of the 968.

Doesn't surprize me much. The 993 is the object of longing for many petrol heads. Good for us!!

Here is a picture I took at the Ventura Auto Fest in September. You can see the difference between the two. I'll stay with the 993 but the 997 is a beauty

no doubt the shape of the 997 was inspired in the greatest of the air cooled machines. Porscheophiles allways love the 993 look. However the 997 look is bad for 996 owners, as i guess the sale price of their cars will be highly affected on the new/old design of the 997 .... . excuse my broken english. eloy

A week ago while my car was parked and I was openning the passenger side door for a friend, I had a guy stop and ask me if my car was a 944. When I told him it was a 95 993. He replyed "Oh, I tought it was older". Within a minute after the guy walked off someone else stopped and asked me if it was the new 997.
It must be my wheels that make my car look "old".
Oh well,

Good ones, guys. I really appreciated you posting the pics of the white 997 and your 993 next to each other. It's startling how similar they look from the front and I much prefer our cars from the rear... I don't like that louvered look at all, but that's just me. No WONDER people have been asking me about the "new" Porsche. If they see it from the front, it truly looks similar. It's funny how we have the car that looks new all the sudden. Most cars look dated as they age, while the styling cues from our car have been reinvented in the new, making our cars basically timeless.

How sweet it is.

It's the hips, the 993 has sexy hips, the 997 does not....

imho, the 997 from the front looks like a New Beetle seen through beer goggles. It's disproportionate because the freaking thing is so BIG. If you see one up close, the front light assemblies are the size of pumpkins!

The rear end does look damn good though.
