IIRC, I had a dream once* when I was doing about 150+ on the speedo, but indicated 147 on the digital thingamy.... 
Oh! and a mid 90's Corvette in the rear view mirror getting smaller somewhere along the I-10 from Phoenix to LA.
*no really it was a dream sequence, and no "tax extraction" types are reading this, right?

As pcar964 suggests: high-speed itself is maybe not such a thrill after you have experienced it once. The biggest thrill is to watch traffic on the right lane. I cannot keep the fear out of my mind that one of the slow-going cars would not see me approaching and switches onto my lane in order to overtake that truck...
Usually I choose a cruising speed between 80 and 100 mph.

I got to a fraction over 140 on a deserted dual carriageway at 1am. There was one car in the distance and it's scary how quick you reach them at that speed!
I prefer the feeling of acceleration rather than sustained high-speed, although the adrenaline does kick in 'cause you know you could lose your licence (and much more if a tyre blows) in an instant. PC Plod would have no hesitation of ripping your licence up in front of you at this speed!

'96 993 C4S indicated 175mph, actually 169mph (GPS), very little left
'93 993 C2 indicated 155mph, actually 155mph (GPS), lots and lots left
'98 993 TT indicated 186mph, actually 176mph (GPS), still pulling...
I'm certain my tt (standard 408bhp) will do 180mph, but i doubt i'd get to 185 without a significant tailwind. If i could rev out in top i'd be doing 194.4mph!

I'm not sure how many here find high speed to be scary, but I simply find it to be fun and thrilling. It's a rush, pure and simple. Perhaps some people operate on a higher plane of speed whereby 180 mph is nodding off territory but, by most people's standards, that's really moving. Lest you forget, the consequences of making a wrong move because of a deer darting across the highway, a blown tire, etc are much more grave than at 75. Additionally, balanced or not, a car without any aero aids and, I'm not just referring to 993's here, may start to become light in the front or rear. At 150 plus, those speeds very much get my attention. But what do I know? I just race on the weekends and don't do it for a living.
Hell, I'll ride my mountain bike and bomb down a hill at, what, 40 mph, and find that to be a charge for many of the same reasons that CP mentions. Relative to the trees that I'm whizzing so closely by, it feels like I'm flying.
On the track, "top speed" is less than thrilling because 1) it's not illegal; 2) everyone else is doing it or doing it faster than you. But on the track, there's that little thing called a corner, and the challenge of carrying as much speed into that corner without killing exit speed, overcooking it, etc is, undoubtedly, a thrill. At least it is for this humble, speed-addled dolt.

150 every Time i take the car for a Spin , 175 on the Autobahn 2-3 Times a week , i had the analog Speedo at 300 KM/h ,the Display was 286 KM/h , thats in the 2s .
In the Turbo ( 450 HP WLS II )i hit 330 and 312 .
The Speedster i hit 300 analog once ( no Display ) ,
Working on a TT now trying to hit 350 analog , 580-600 HP ,will know in about 4 month if we can reach that .

Thats the biggest risk. is someone elses stupidity. Your dialed in when your driving that fast.. and your looking miles ahead of you cause you know it will be there faster than you think.
Funny how i acquired my Twin Turbo, was because i was driving home from Marina Del Rey on the 105 late night noone around, and all of a sudden a Supra Twin Turbo rolled up on me, I was cruising about 80 when he came up. He slowed down to get next to me and taunted with the gas pedal pulling up then slowing down, well I had no choice but to get on it.... Now mind you this is when i had a 96' C4s speed yellow with GT2 gear.... so anyways we both get on it and this guy pulled away from me faster than i could imagine. I figured this.... If you have a car that looks like this... speed yellow GT2.... it should be able to back up its appearance. I bought the car in 12/01 with 12k miles on it.. I had it 8 months and traded it in on a Twin Turbo. Well couple months ago i am driving North from San Diego on the 5 and guess whol rolls up..
Again he taunts, but this story ended a lot different..... smoked his assss. This is why i own my car... superior engineering, handling, power w/all wheel drive... Doesnt get any better than this........

Great story. The thing is that the 993s with aero kits LOOK so 'hot' that many drivers would like to see if it's for real. When I have black RUF wheels I got a lot of 'invites'. I never street race as the Bay Area traffic is a disaster waiting to happen anyways. But it's good to know that when our cars talk the talk, they can walk the walk as well.
No knock on the regular Carreras as it is a fantastic car. I remember my partner at AA&Co took me for a spin in his 930 and blew my mind with it's performance. Unfortunately with the competition we have today, the 911 does not reign supreme as it used to. That's why Porsche builds turbos, just in case we need one, I guess.
I don't condone street racing, nor do I enjoy winning them, even though my RUF probably wouldn't loose many. Just a thought.

I was @ a little over an indicated 120 mph when I had to change lanes and quickly slow to "normal" speeds to get out of the way of a 996TT who passed me @ 160 mph. It was amazing watching him approach so fast knowing my speed!
I think I'll save any more very high speed passes for the track!

I hit a little over 150 mph on rice road, (on the way to Lake Havasu City AZ) nobody in site, radar detector ON. Sacred the $hit out of me, but I really enjoyed it. Would do again for sure, the car felt perfectly stable no vibrations or funny noises. My fear was getting caught, in Cali they can take your car and not return it.

YES, ACCELERATION!
The needle passes mark "4". You sense the engine "coming on the cam", the resonnator flap opens. Awakened, this beast in there revs and revs like there is no tomorrow, banging angrly against the harsh rev limiter. No vibrations, absolutely smooth, but amplified by this increasing chain saw sound. Finally, you understand why Ferry chose the boxer layout and the oil pressure indicator glued to "5" becomes your blood pressure indicator...It is the source of this noise. Not from the front, but from the rear, away from your eye-sight. An increasing sound wave builds up from behind and shoves you and the car forward. You surf on the boxer-wave. It gives me goosebumps again and again.
And finally, you understand why even the 993 in all its refinement still has the gene of the oldest beetle. This old pig behind in there asks for more and more. Built to be driven all day WOT, impossible to be abused - exactly like a beetle. On a warm day you can actually see the oil temp indicator drop at sustained high speeds.
There are reasons for me having a 993 which cannot be explained in hp or mph figures. But I am looking forward to a 930 for a more intense rodeo drive.
