pcar964, im not trying to start any shiit with you but. it seems your not getting the question.....it was simply put.... "how fast have you gone in your 993". I dont think any responsible Porsche owner will tell you to speed on a public highway that would jeopardize yourself or others.... but there are times when we all have done it.... and thats all we are doing here.. is just sharing experiences....I personally dont condone it..... but like I said havn't we alll done it?.... The track is the best place to be without a doubt.... but we are just sharing experiences... thats all......

After an incredibly boring drive in convoy with 5 other 911s (convoy was '72 911S, 911 3.2, 964RS, 993C4, 996C4S, 997S) down to Rouen from Calais en route to Le Mans, we decided to just nail it. It was somewhere between 150 and 160mph, whilst she was still pulling hard, that there appeared to be a strobe flash from a blue breadvan parked underneath one of the overpass bridges as we all passed underneath in a 911-blur. We all slowed down to a more respectable 100mph gait as we wondered how much it was going to cost us as part of our "LM experience", then just decided that it was going to be worth it!

Thankfully, there was no letter through the post, we all arrived safely with no incidents, and had a brilliant 5 days at LM in scorching sunshine. My GPS later indicated we did a max of 154mph...

Lessons learned:
- the 993 has a very relaxing and natural cruising ability anywhere between 90 - 110mph in sixth
- pedal to the metal in 4th at around 130-140mph is air-cooled-nirvana
- at 150mph, my baby was rock solid even during lane changes
- must go to LM again....

Just a couple of weeks ago at 7:00 am on a sunny Sunday morning I entered The Florida Turnpike, got on it to enjoy the rush of acceleration coming around the 270 degree entrance ramp, hit my lane, and viola' - no traffic within sight. Oh yea! With no plan in mind I kept accelerating. ...and accelerating ...and accelerating. Through fourth. Through fifth. YIKES!!! Still no traffic.

Now note: the turnpike is flat, well maintained, has no entrances except through toll gates, and has a concrete barrier between north and south bound lanes - i.e. low risk to other drivers.

...and accerlerating ...and accelerating into sixth. Glance down and there's 150. ...and accelerating. There goes 160. ...165 ...170 At 174 it seemed to top out so I I let off. WOW!!!

I don't see that happening again anytime soon but it sure was a thrill for a one time event.

My usual adreline rush is found at Sebring and Moroso. At Sebring I can get 130 if I hit the turns preceding the straight correctly.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Default How fast

Last year, I was asked by the great Dr. Ken Garchow to make a trip from Portland, OR to Boise, ID to pick up his 607hp 993 tt. I was pretty nervous about driving the car at first, especially since it was not mine, so rarely went above 80mph while in Idaho. Once I hit the Pendleton area on I-84, a huge two lane straight away was before me. From third gear, I accelerated and shifted to 4 and then to 5. I looked down at the digital speedo and it read 184! I thought it was an error and that the digital speedo had jumped up too fast because I had accelerated so quickly. I then looked at the other speedo and the needle was right at 184 and heading towards 200. I was still in 5th gear and there was a lot of peddle left. I thought for a brief moment about taking it above the 200mph bar, but ended up not having the ***** to do it.

Upon arriving at Ken's house, Ken came out to inspect the car. He started going through the ditial computer and noticed that the car had an average speed of 74mph. To say the least, this was the fastest I had ever been in a car and also the quickest trip from Boise to Portland excluding a plane ride.

Ken was originally hesitant about buying this car because he thought it would be too damn fast and that he would get in a lot of trouble - I wonder why?

An indicated 150 for about 15 minutes on Interstate in Northern Vermont just before Canadian border. Light to no traffic, clear fall late afternoon. Smooth roadway.

37 miles in 15 minutes. That's motoring!

I have been between the 170-180 range in my speedometer several times. Once even hit the 180 mark. My 95 has an autothority chip, cat bypasses and the motorsound airbox, other than that it is stock. I did 187 in my fathers GT2, with plenty of room to go. Great thread guys.

Fast is relative.......180+ is only fast when near or on the ground.....Although I don't do it regularly, I like to fly at around 100-150 ft at 200+mph once in a while to get my adrenaline fix.....150mph seems to be my ground limit unless I'm on a track.

Last year coming back from Vegas, my wife & I made to our driveway in San Diego from Tropicana & I-15 in 3hr 24min averaging 106mph for the distance......not bad for a little MB C-230.

Hope you're not operating closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure. (FAR 91.119)

I have been 135 at the track, Las International Speedway and California Speedway...that is approaching 135 in 5th gear as I recall.

On a deserted highway I hit 140 briefly....but don't have the desire or guts to go any faster. Also, if I were to to get caught by the Cali Highway Potrol, anything over 100...they can impound your car and take you to jail....

Going fast in a straight line does not do it for me...its just knowing that you your car can do it....but do I want to take the riskand pay the price? Not me...

OT: Negative on that violation Jeff , the worst I have ever done was edge an active offshore MOA on my way to Catalina Island in pre 9/11 airspace prompting So Cal to advise me to change course slightly or I might become a target for a AIM-9!

For the last few years I have been flying with Navy Flying Club out of North Island Naval Airstation (Halsey Field) and we regularly transition the north bound corridor (Pt. Loma departure) at or below 250', besides that we have lots of ocean & desert to fly low over and if I accidentally happen to fly over an illegal alien crossing the border they won't call the FSDO and report me anyway.
