BHP Brake pads squealing
I just replaced my rotors and put on the BHP pads on my 95 993. How in the world do I get rid of the squealing noise these pads make? Should I replace with different pads? What do you guys recommend for performance pads with no noise? Thanks in advance, George.

Hi George,
Welcome to Rennlist! There is lots in the archives on this subject. IMHO, the OEM Textar pads are superb pads and require no "upgrade" to "performance" pads. I've used them on the track, which is obviously more taxing on brakes than street, and had no problems. Personally, I see no advantage to using anything other then the Textars for street apps. I use LubroMoly's high-temp brake grease on the backing and *never* have any squeal on mine, a daily-driver.

I installed textars a couple of months ago and have had absolutley no noise whatsoever....but then I went against all advice and did use the Porsche antisqueal spiders so if I had got noise I would have been very upset..........

George,
I had exactly the same issue with my BHPs. I bought mine through Pelican and complained/commented back to them. They put me in touch with Tim (at least I think that was his name) who owns the company. He was supposed to be developing an additional backing to put on the pads to help. I haven't heard from him in 6 months and can't find his number, so I don't know the status of that. The problem seems to be with 993 and 993TT. Anyway, do an exaggerated breakin (up to 50, brake hard to 20 type thing, 10x) roll into the drive and spray them hard to get any dust out. I bought some brake silencing stuff but got the noise down to a livable, and not so embarrassing level, before using it.
btw, did you replace the rotors? It'll be tougher if you didn't. I did and still my kids didn't want to be caught out in my car for a couple of months.

I've got my OEM Textar pads and starting the DIY. I'm going to ditch the spiders, and I have some hi-temp caliper grease to put on the back of the pads, as I've read this helps prevent squealing -- any suggestions on how much to put on would be greatly appreciated.

Just a thin smear local to where the pistons touch. Some apply where the pad backing plates touch the caliper striker plates (forward and aft edges)..
I dont have anti squeel spiders and install the Textars dry, no problems here

I too installed the BHP pads with new rotors and they SCREAMED. I sent an e-mail to BHP and they called me the next day. They claim that the only car that they have squeal problems with is the 993. This is what they suggested. I have only done steps 1 and 2 and it has helped slightly.
1. With the car in second gear accelerate to high RPM and then brake hard to low RPM, repeat at least 12 times in succession.
2. Hose off the brake dust from the pads and rotors regularly.
3. Remove the 'tangs' that the pads sit on and place a piece of two-sided kapton tape between the tangs and the caliper.
4. Put some graphite lube on the tangs.

Well I've had a two month suspension project that included 993 calipers and new rotors all around on my '84 911. I'd bought BHP's during the summer while I was hoarding parts. Well imagine my horror when I got my car on the ground and heard the cacophony from the front brakes. It was terrible. It totally negated the joy I should have felt from all my new suspension goodies.
For the record, I e-mailed info@bhp and briefly explained the situ. I had an e-mail from Tim the owner on Friday, with his sell phone and he invited me to call him during the New Year's weekend. I'll wait til Tuesday, but I want to say I tried the chamfer, and put the slightest amount of anti-seize on the 3 outer edges of the pad that slide in the caliper. I then did the numerous agressive runs in second gear, and came home and sprayed. The level of squealing is DRAMTICALLY reduced. For a non-daily driver, and overall fun/track car, it seems acceptable at this time. I'll call Tim Tuesday, and report back anything not mentioned in this thread.

I just installed the Textars Saturday, not one squeek while bedding them in or any other stops. When I recieved my car 4+ months ago the previous owner said the Porsche dealer had just installed new rotors and the stock pads he had on hand. Now I know why my brakes squeeled like a stuck pig from 10mph to 0, they were Pagid Blacks. They did work great during the November DE I went to.
I'm going to try the Textars for the next AX and see how they fare.
The front pads are now going to be very simple to swap as I did away with the sensors and the spiders, sure is nice to have a stealthy stopper

Tim is very nice. Great guy on the phone. But I just had my car out again Friday and was immediately reminded of how loud these pads are for a regular drive. At this point, as a guy who does the occasional AX I don't think I'd do it again.
