xrix,
Sounds like either the resonance flap or varioram wasnt working on the first run . Then it was fixed as part of the remap. The chip was worth maybe +15bhp so not so agressive with UK 98 octane fuel . How about giving AMD a call to see if they have a record of your car ? They have been around for a long time . Good luck Geoff |

xrix,
Sorry just read your post again. Forget reference to Varioram. It was the resonance flap not working- very common and it kills the top end. Do you have any exhaust modifications ? It doesnt take a lot to get a good 272 993 up to 290 ! All the best Geoff |

Hi all,
I had a chance to examine the dizzy caps and rotors this weekend, and found them to be *seriously* eroded. I'm amazed the car was running as well as it was with these on it. So now they are replaced all is running very smoothly. I've cleared the fault codes, run a few days and still have no knock code. I'll wait until I've run another tankful through it (and given it some more right foot) before I celebrate but it's looking good so far. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, -- Chris |

Not sure if you can tell if a chip has been reprogrammed? I did think about this when the numbers came out, I've seen the figure of 15Bhp bandied about for non VR cars on remapping from various places. Other than that it must be the Optimax effect Pete |

So it all looks good, no knock code after another few days of hard driving. I gave it a nice oil and filter change today as a reward, as I'm back to smooth running happiness, and I get to keep my bhp :-)

XRIX,
Good to hear that your issues seem to be cleared up now. Also nice to see another Bournemouth Porsche! Are you planning on doing your own services and repairs? or using an independent specialist or the OPC (Official Porsche Main Stealership)??? |

Hi!
Yes I'm going to handle my own maintenance, unless it gets really nasty. I can't do bodywork (and I already need some - bird crap on my luggage cover lid :-() but I'll attempt most other stuff. I have some friends who can give me pretty good adivice and help (and now the Rennlisters). It's half the fun of owning a car like this IMHO. I have a rear wheel bearing and brake disk replacement coming up, so I wonder how confident I'll feel after that... Oh and if you're looking up out for my car in / around Bournemouth, I've changed number plate since that picture was taken, but I think I'm the only 993 running on twists around these parts. Maybe I've seen your car around here? -- Chris |

I just got back from PPI for '97 993 I am looking to purchase. During the inspection we got error codes 210 - Knock Sensor 1, 211 - Knock Sensor 2 and 222 Knock Pulse Test. Tech has not run across this before - that is both sensors at the same time. Anyone run into this before? Anything to be concerned about?
Thanks, Vince |

Vince,
I think one needs a lot more information to offer any constructive suggestions. Engine mileage, fuel octane, miles since last major tuneup, and any recent work history will all be helpful here,....

73,500 mi. on the car 67,800 mi. Plugs and wires done. Caps and rotor were fairly new. (car purchased w/ 67,000 mi but no records, changed all 12 plugs anyhow) Fuel is Premium (93 oct.) Exxon or Shell Only recent service was oil and both filters. One thing I need to point out is the battery is weak, I was going to put in a new Interstate but Vince wants a Optima so rather than delay the sale he"ll put the battery in himself. I'm wondering if the weak battery may be causing this? Nothing (no errors) show up on my OBDii scanner, the shop uses the flat panel Porsche tester (not the Hammer, don't remember what it's called). I know it will pick up many more issues than any OBDii handheld. Thanks for your thoughts Steve.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your input,.... ![]() Low system voltages can generate many odd and unrelated DTC's so its possible thats the root cause. One would like to know what the no-load battery voltage is. Failing DMFW's also trigger these codes as can the Hall Sensor and its connector on the distributor. That "flat" Porsche scan tool is the PST-2 is the preferred tool for interrogating these cars. Hope this helps, Quote:

Thanks Steve, that makes sense.
Vince, I know you're going to ask so DMFW stands for Dual-Mass Flywheel. We'll start with the battery and go from there. We'll discuss the potential flywheel issue with Wicky. Call me when you're ready.
