OT: Any one like 928 GT's
Just got back from Motorsport in Salt Lake City-they installed rotors, pads, sensors, oil change, 2 rear decklid shocks and clutch flush and saw a nice 1989 928 GT for sale. Sounded and looked great!
Im going to pick one up one these days. If I have my way, I will have several models down the road to drive. One for each day of the week sounds like a plan.

Link does not work.
928's are great cars, and they can be fast. My track car is an '89 928 GT, and I've driven it three times now, and I'm doing 2:37.1 at Road America. Next time out I'm sure I can knock another 5 or 6 seconds off of that which will put me close to my time I had in my stock '02 Z06 at 2:31.617.
I would suggest an 87-onwards 5-speed, preferably a GT.

My co-workers clean, immaculate, red 928, kinesis (sp) rims etc...motor blew up on him 5 months ago. Currently he is putting in a re-built one together with using some parts from his old one (he had recently prior to the failure spent quite a bit of money on timing chain etc). We speak on the progress weekly..this week he needed to order all new gaskets and lifters..think 32 at $100 a piece..eek.
Nice cars..but they sound pretty expensive to fix. Sounds like an extensive PPI is a must when buying one.

928's rock. They aren't that complex mechanically, the wiring and vacuum hoses are the culprits in most driveability issues. If you keep the timing belt/water pump/rollers all good, the engines are amazingly long lived (Mine, for example, has 108K miles and it burns next to NO oil-- less than half a quart between 4,000 mile changes). Conscientious maintenance is all that's required. People who don't care for their 928's and let stuff pile up are the ones who suffer. You don't want to buy one that's been neglected.
I love my Shark. I'm sad to have to let it go.

Fantastic cars - driven numerous versions and had them for years: dead reliable and easy to maintain ... if you like DIY. The Club Sport is the icon of the series - with the '89 GT a close second: the latter will be my next one -

Who couldn't love the 928? Risky Business? Scarface? I remember going to the track and watching some go round and round. One driver was a paraplegic and had hand controls.
Those V8s sound so gorgeous.

A 5-speed, well-cared for S4/GT/GTS is definetely excellent value for money, but such good cars start to be increasingly hard to find. It supplements the 993 superbly as a grand tourer.

Three Wheelin'
Having owned a 1980 for years I can tell you they are VERY expensive to maintain. Mine wasn't a later model with all of the extra electronic gizmos or more complex 4-valve motors but these cars have little things that break and few good mechanics know how to fix them (correctly). I think the GTS's with the wide rear fenders look great and one of those in excellent condition with a 5-speed, upgraded suspension and wheels is a really cool ride. Many over on the 928 board would say a GT is more bang for the buck since the performance is not far off the mark. I suspect that the extra $$$ spent on a GTS will be rewarded with stronger retained value. For not much difference in price you could get a CL500 Benz vs a GTS. My friend lent me his for about a week and I really thought it was an awsome ride.

Great cars, and I was on the virge of buying a 5-speed S4 years ago. I love them for the looks and "GT-ness" experience of it all. BUT, they are expensive to fix ...not unreliable. A well-cared for example simply needs the regular stuff taken care of to remain strong and trouble free. But parts are simply more pricey. Since I do 99% of all my wrenching, I researched prices for misc parts and found that everything is higher for 928s. I figured it was prob due to their smaller numbers and thus there are far fewer vendors and aftermarket manufacturers compared to the ubiquitous 911. And the engine bay, of the later S4s anyway, ARE more difficult to wade through than a 993, which is even worse if you are paying for the labor. Then there are the potential electrical gremlins from the myriad of creature comforts of what was Porsche's flagship model. That said, if I had the extra discresionary income, I'd get one in a heartbeat. It really is a beautiful car to drive, and makes a superb stable mate to any 911, IMHO.

a good friend of mine has a 95 GTS 5 speed, 25k miles, few mods, bought it for 65000$ about 2 years ago. the gts manuals are very very rare , and they are selling for big bucks if you can find one. as far the car it self, its just a beauty, the muscle car of porsche, and let me tell you ITS FAST. as far as looks, many die hard porsche enthusiast think they are the best looking porsche ever made, well we all have our opinions!!.
they are very reliable cars if not more reliable than 911s. their engine is basically 2 944 engine put together, and if you know 944s, you know they will go 300k miles and still run strong, but you have to keep up with the timing belt and water pump every 30k miles.
