Found Porsche 959 need help with price
Through the local Porsche grapevine I have uncovered a black on black 959 with less than 6k miles. The details are a little sketch (all that' is clear is a long line of celebrity owners) right now but I am thinking about making an offer...what are the current prices?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Bruce Canepa in Santa Cruz was the first outfit to get the 959 to pass smog (I think), and has sold several of them. Contact: http://www.canepa.com/ and see if someone there can help you get a fair price. I believe that approx 250 959s were produced worldwide, and for most of their life, they could not be imported here. No affiliation, nor any actual knowledge (on any subject, if you ask my teen-aged daughter).

You need to go to the last 25% of the posts to see the debate about whether the Canepa mods have "ruined" the original nature of the car....interesting read.

Thanks for the link on the mods. Im not sure Im in the "ruined" camp. If I had the money laying around to buy a Canepa, that car certainly would be a contender. I probably would opt to keep the euro spec guages... Wonder if anyone is ordering "track specific" 959 conversion with roll cage and further mods? Probably not considering their price tag... Much cheaper race platforms to start with... Canepa mods seem like it would be capable on the track Wonder how the car handles and accelerates compared to the GT40?

From what I've read there is a law specifically allowing 959's to roam the streets of the U.S. (albeit not Canada I believe). An excerpt re: Bill Gates infamous 959:
"Now, after waiting some 10 years, Gates can finally enjoy his other favorite Porsche: a rare (1 of 230) 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe. In fact, due to the 959’s questionable emissions and unknown crash ratings, it took a federal law signed by President Clinton for Bill Gates to legally drive his 959 on American roads. Rumor has it that Bill Gates and Paul Allen employed Microsoft engineers to write a computer program that could simulate the 959’s crashworthiness, which helped in the bill’s passage."

Burning Brakes
I've seen two (both owned by the same person) at Tony Callas place in Redondo Beach, CA. He was working on one of them at the time. It would be worth a call to his shop to get his opinion on this.

I asked Bill Gates about this (not a lie, I work for him)... here is the copy/paste email of his response:
Yes – I finally succeeded in getting my 959 out of the free trade zone in Oakland after it was there 5 years.
Certain 959’s were allowed to come in.
A long time ago I had the 959 here for a few years but then the law changed and I had to send it back to Germany and then it was sent to the free trade zone.

Hi Bill,
I don't want to waste too much of your time, but a few of us here have had a long debate about your ownership of a 959. As an avid Porsche-phile I had heard that you were able to successfully import it. Do you have your 959?
Thanks for your time

The 959 was designed a certain way, and it is a sportscar icon especially to Porschephiles - and to alter such a great part of Porsche history is in extremely poor taste imho.

Being the purist that I am, I definitely agree that the Canepa cars are Bastardized but let me tell you, I drove one that we serviced last week and it was incredibly fast.

959 should stay the way they were designed. any so called "improvements" are sacrilige.
