Default The Ultimate Compliment, “Is it new?”

As I was uncovering my 993 after coming out of the gym the guy who parked next to me said, “I can see why you cover it, it’s beautiful. Is it new?”

Not a bad compliment for a 9-year-old car.

Yeah, it's great, isn't it?

I get asked quite often how old my p-car is - and then they can't believe it's original paint (...and that's it's been driven in the winter )

One of the many pleasures of owning these beauties

Last year someone asked me "Is that the new wide body 997?"

When I went see some relatives back in May, they too thought I had a new car and were quite astonished when I told them it was a '98.

It just shows you how timeless the cars are to the average American. Taht would never have happened in Germany. Those men know their cars!

I've had that comment before but an even better one was the college kid who pretended to kick the front of mine with his girlfriend in tow. He didn't realize I was walking out of the grocery store right behind him. I basically told him if he kicked my car I'd kick his ***. Almost came to fisticuffs. Lets just say some people have interesting ways of showing their appreciation for a clean 993!

I actually had a very similar thing happen in a parking lot with the guy not knowing I was standing right next to him while he was talking **** about Porsches in general to some girl. I was dressed like a bum with flip flops, sleevless t-shirt & wholly Levi's so he never once thought it was my car.

He went on for a couple of minutes telling the girl why my car was just a status symbol and the that the car was probably owned by some stuck up ******* who was so insecure that he had to drive a car like mine to show he thought he was superior to the rest of society.

He then pretended to kick my front bumper and that's when I introduced myself, we almost had a nice fistfight but he saw that he wouldn't stand a chance (I'm 6'2" 255lbs & he was much smaller) and backed off while yelling insults about me & my car.

I just don't get the angry people who go off on us only due to the cars we drive???????

I get the same comments from time to time on my 95 C4 and my 77 Bronco Sport. The Bronco, for a 30 year old vehicle, is holding its ground exceptionally well. The Bronco by far receives compliments 20 to 1 over my Porsche. I would say a dozen people have walked up and said "Do you want to sell your Bronco?" Neither are my daily drivers.

A few months back I ranted about a guy who was an uninvited guest to a friend's party and moved his car only inches from my bumper to mess with me, again, never having seen me or met me. I moved the car a bit only to find that he had moved his car even closer. I wound up leaving the party to avoid the inevitable fight. My latest incident yesterday was right in front of a very busy grocery store in plain view of lots of patrons and employees. If I had not been right in front and if my door wasn't between me and him I probably would have thrown a punch or a frontkick to his solar plexus. I can't believe he was stupid enough to advance towards me like that. He took off pretty quickly after spitting on the car. I just let it go. Needless to say he appreciated my 993 so much he drooled on it!

It's great getting compliments. When I got my 993 my friends thought it was brand new. The 997 doesn't help our plight to distinguish our cars as 10 years old.

My (new to me) 993 arrives tomorrow. It sounds like I need to start working out.
