pcar's got it going on..............my 84 was raw, F1-esque with a body, and with the mods.....gobs of let it hang out power...........no 'electronics' to save your butt with TTO........so learn to drive, or drive where you're not going off a cliff or hitting large solid objects!.................held on to both the 84 and my 993 for as long as economics allowed................would love to have the 84 back................purist is in fact purist................and the lines go to the roots of P-Car in a way unmatched in my view by later editions, including my beloved 993.............

I'm with you - I love the 993, but if I had to choose just one Pcar to keep for the rest of my life, it would probably be a nicely modded 3.2 Carrera.

Ditto for me. As much as I love my 993, I definitely miss certain characteristics of the Carrera, including the 915 tranny (call me crazy with that one)!

+1 again. I have never understood why people consider the 915 to be a liability, I find it to be more involving and fun to drive than the G50 by a BIG margin. The whole experience driving a 911 of that vintage demands a level of driver involvement that newer 911s can never hope to match. The steering, the brakes, the clutch, and indeed the 915 tranny, are all integral parts of that equation imho.

In fact, I would never buy an 87-89 Carrera because I hate the feel of the hydraulic clutch and G50 in the 3.2, it just "doesn't fit the car" in my opinion. Plus they're heavier than the 915 cars. Anyway, I know I'm in the minority on this topic, but I really couldn't care less. Viva la 915!

i have an 87 3.2 and also had a 993..as much as i love the 993,i really enjoy the 3.2 more..sure i would like more power, but the 3.2 feels better to me..i have never been close (thank God) to having the back end come around...i will say, that i have even tried to push and it wasnt even close...i did hit a tree in my 993(going 15 mph)..maybe someone can explain this to me...but the 993 always felt like it wanted to come around..wheel size?weight?
i drove a 993 recently and loved it but, there is something about the 3.2 that feels perfect..i have 100k on it and its running great..i am not a track guy and do not compete in anything so those 10ths of seconds do not pertain to me..j

Amen to that ! I was an idiot to let my '84 go. I figured I would'nt have time to drive each of them enough to justify keeping both. Although I could afford to keep both, the "warbaby" complex kicked in ! I had a drive of 1400kms nonstop - xcept for comforts and was still smiling when I stopped. Just couldn't drive that car enough. As for mods -Bilsteins made the most incredible differnce. Obvious I guess, the car had 150k kms when I bought it from the previous and 1st owner who never took it over 4000 rpm!!! and had everything"original". Hell, gets me sentimental. BTW Cheers and Christmas Best Wishes from Cape Town. TT

I agree to a point, but a 993 can have that same tactile feel as the older P cars, but to achieve that, it requires serious suspension upgrades which we all know aren't cheap.

It can never achieve the feel of the 3.2 Carrera. It's too different. I have PSS9s and even at full stiff, with my little Momo wheel, it's not the same. Maybe a manual steering rack would help bridge the gap, but I think even then, the chassis is too refined to ever achieve the same tactility and rawness.

Please let's drop this subject before I do something stupid and sell my 993

Obviously you are the expert in regards to feel, please forgive someone who actually instructed & raced Porsches, including 911SC's, 3.2 Carrera's & 993's for over 15 years for thinking he knew something about the feedback & feel of 911's, I bow to your superior knowledge and/or experience

Humbly yours,

I had an 87 G50 Carrera with Bilstein Sports and RA-1's. Otherwise bone stock. Have taken it to the track, drove twisties and the like. Wonderful car, great memories. Beautiful car.

My 993 is heavily modified for track duty, so it's not really a fair comparison. I do agree that I wish it did not have power steering, except for the strength it would take to push the big meats around. The torque and power makes it perform at a completely different level (both cars weigh the same, 993 has 60 more hp). But as for feel, confidence at speed, feedback, I wouldn't trade.

I am going to try to pronounce that after a few drinks tomorrow night. I think I might impress some people with my vocabulary....
