Introducing me and my new 993...
I thought I'd put up a quick introduction here, as two weeks ago I became a 993 owner and Rennlist member. To my surprise, the search for the right car only took a few days. I had just returned home from a year and a half overseas and was hanging out with my family in Vermont when I found a varioram coupe just over the border in New Hampshire.
Before getting into the details on the car, I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who have posted so much information on this forum and on p-car.com. I read both of these sites obsessively for a week before making the purchase, and found answers to almost everything I wanted to know.
The car is a black 1996 coupe with 84,900 miles on it and a deviated navy blue/light grey interior. Before the previous owner moved to New Hampshire in 2002, it lived in the Washington DC area and was owned for most of its life by a female doctor who maintained it fastidiously. It came with all the books and service records from the day it was purchased new from a dealership in West Virginia in 1997. It also came with the window sticker, which shows the only options being a hi-fi sound system, 17" cup rims, and power seats. In the first few years of its life this car had the power steering rack replaced under warranty and the windshield replaced (apparently due to delamination).
I couldn't be happier with this 993. It's never been hit or damaged, and mechanically speaking is in excellent health. When I bought it, it needed a thorough cleaning, as the PO was apparently not that into washing and waxing the car. This weekend I clay barred and waxed the car, touched up some stone chips, and now it looks like it has half the miles on the odometer. It's never been exposed to the winter salt, and cleaned up beautifully.
But the best thing of all about this car is that two years ago, the PO had PSS9's and 18" wheels installed, and had the car lowered, corner balanced, and aligned. And last year he had the top end rebuilt, the engine re-sealed, and a full tune-up done, including plugs, wires, caps, rotors, and filters. It also has HID's. This 993 doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil.
The first thing I did the morning after I drove home with it was drill the airbox cover. I've also installed an RS heater tube and will be putting Fabspeed cat bypasses on this week (thanks, Martin S!). Otherwise everything I do to this car will involve lightening it. I've already pulled out the rear flip-down seats, seat belts, and jack, compressor, and tool kit. I threw it on the corner balance scales this weekend, and with a half-tank of fuel it weighed in at 2,990 pounds. That's obscenely heavy, IMHO.
Here are a few pics -- in the first two the car is in its filthy, pre-cleaned phase, and it was drizzling slightly. The final one is after the clay bar.
