I'm sorry for the off topic question.

What is the difference between blogs and discussion boards?

This question was posed to me by my son and I said let me find out from the most informative group I know...RL..sters.

My understanding (and I'm a computer/web guy, but not a blogger), is a blog is simply a web page/site you as the blogger keep to publish your thoughts/ideas to the world. Blogs don't need or require a feedback capability, though many have them. In short, a blog is your own private (though published) soapbox.

A discussion forum, like RL, is a place where people including, but not limited to, the web site's administrator can discuss topics. Equal (or, at least as much as allowed by the admin) voices.

This may be a poor analogy, but a discussion board is like bar where people meet, while a blog is like a personal radio station where one broadcasts a diary.

Mark has it right. Blog is short for web log or an online diary where the owner initiates all new posts. The owner of the blog may, or may not allow open comments below the initial post. In a discussion board anyone can generally start a thread and while there may be moderators, the moderators do not set the topics or control the show the way an owner of a blog does.

To Jeff's point, a wiki is a collection of "Articles" that people can edit. I think the rennlist howto section should be a wiki.

Forum - A place for a collection of morons with computers and internet connections who believe others on the forum care what they think.
