Pressing Odometer Button While Moving
Greetings all! I have been reading some postings that suggest what breaks the aged gears in the 993 odometer is resetting it while moving. If the weak link gears are replaced in the odometer is it still susceptible to breaking if reset on the fly? Thanks.

The factory odometer gears are a weak point and most will eventually break. The factory grease softens the OEM gears. Get new stronger gears here:

They sometimes break when resetting the trip meter, but if they do, they were ready to break anyway. No affiliation with this link except I replaced both gears in one of my cars and was very satisfied with the service and product. Call them and talk to them before you order so you get the right gears. Good luck with the replacement, not a difficult DIY.
Where in Florida are you, I'd be glad to help you change them.

You can definitely break the odometer gears by simply resetting, even if you're at a standstill. AMHIK.
+1 on Jeff @ odometergears.com, I just did this repair myself last week.

Odometer Repair
I just received the two gears from Jeff and will be doing the repair this weekend. Any last minute suggestions? Seems the speedometer needle removal is the breaking point. When you replace the needle, how would you know exactly what position to replace it for accurate MPH? Thanks.
P.S. Wow is he fast on the shipping. Arrived in just a day or so.

The latest is that you shouldn't even have to remove the needle to change out the gear. Just a little finesse to get the motor assembly out where you can replace the gears.

When I did my repair, I removed the needle, since that's what the DIY said. I hadn't heard that you could get the motor out w/o removing the needle, but I'd be afraid that I'd bend or break the small shaft in attempting that.
As for getting the needle in the right spot, you'll feel the stops when you spin the needle. So basically you just want to align the needle with the 0mph stop. Actually, from head-on you'll want it to read 1 or 2mph, because then when it's in the car (and slightly to your right), it'll look correct.

I just did mine about 3 weeks ago and was able to do it without removing the needle. There is a footnote on p-car that indicates that it can be done without removing the needle but it doesn't give a lot of detail. I don't really have any advice other than what is on p-car, but I was able to figure out how to do it without too much trouble.
Good luck...
