Default Cannot Decide.. Coupe or Cab

New to rennlist, but a long time p person. sold my 911 (a 2001 996 TT) during a divorce and since then remarried and helped generate 3 small earthlings. Now am tired of driving the mini van and pick up truck and going to buy a car SOON. I have owned an 85 Carrera, a 91 Turbo, a 96 Twin Turbo (my all time favorite) and a new 996 (01) Twin Turbo. The 996 was nice, but well.. lacked the soul of the 96 TT.. even though I waited nearly 4 years! while the 996TT was on order it lacked the SOUL of the 96 TT.. but hey.. I sold it for $5K more than I paid and put about 500 miles on it so well..

Anyway.. now I am thinking 993.. a 96 - 98 .. and am looking to spend around 30-40K.. lots of cars out there.. now I cannot decide if I want a coupe or a cab or an S or a C4 etc etc.

Any guidance?

Where do you live? That makes a big difference as far as coupe/cab is concerned. I can't really speak to that, as I didn't have that choice (see sig). Just spend some time in a N/A 993 to make sure you can live with it after having driven 3 generations of turbos.

what are you looking to do with the car? If you want a weekend driver and like the top down appeal, then get a cab. If you have any interest in AutoX or running a few DE's down the road, then buy a coupe.

To me, the lines of the coupe are more timeless and classic, and with the windows down and the sunroof open, it feels pretty darn open and airy.

We live in Atlanta.. so April-May and Sept-Oct and a few days in between are killer for top down weather... my ex-wife drove a BMW conv and it was nice in the right wx.

I just see myself back into a Turbo.. cost too much and I want a more stress free and lower cost situation.. I dont want to worry about where I park her or whether I took a road rock in the grill. plus I will be strapping the 3 and 5 yr old in the back seat

a nice C4S couple could be fun.. that is basically like my old car but no Turbo I assume..

What does anyone know about C4 Cabriolets..? there seem to be a few of them out there at a pretty decent price point

If I didn't already have a 964 Cab, I would have bought a 993 Cab instead of the Coupe. Atlanta would be perfect for a Cab.

Until I saw you might want a C4, I was going to suggest you track down a 993 Targa.

When living in SC, I owned a convertible and was able to have the top down at least once every month of the year. However, after 10 years of driving a ragtop, I don't really miss it now that I'm driving my 928. If I do get the itch for more wind at this point, I'll go the Targa route myself.

If you think you'll ever track the car, you'll most likely regret buying a cab, although many cab owners DE their cars.

Local to Atlanta as well. Targa is a great suggestion. Best of both worlds + you keep the classic lines.

not familiar with the 993 Targas.. isnt it basically a large sliding glass roof and you have a screen that only covers the front seats?

You can read about my experience (post)

The cabs are great, but more maintanance and something I always worried about. Also, if you have ANY inclination that you're going to get into the track thing, then buy a coupe.

Targas are great of course, but all that heavy glass at the top makes it a poor candidate for the track.
