Default They're predicting gas at $7 gal next yr (oil at $200 barrel).Still keeping your 993?

So I'm watching the news tonight and a respected investment company, the one that predicted oil at $100 a barrel this year is predicting oil at $200 a barrel next year with gasoline at $7 a gallon. Gulp! They were showing that a Honda Accord that costs $66 to fill now would cost $128 a tank! An Escalade that's $94 to fill now would be $188 every time they filled up at $7 a gallon. They added that it would be tough to sell a used Escalade on Craig's List when that happens. I wonder if the price of our cars would be affected due to their relatively crappy mileage? Could consumer sentiment change to one of thrift and tightening in the reins, leaving our resale value depressed? Or will there always be a market for cool cars like the 993 even if gas prices become fairly prohibitive? I'm speaking about the USA in this discussion as European pricing may have already neared these scary levels.

They showed a gas station owner and he was saying that if everyone bought a 4 cyl car and drove that instead of our 6 and 8 cyl cars, we as a nation would save a ton of money on gas and potentially change this present situation we're in.

Unless you're super well off and immune to price fluctuations, you can't help but be affected by this news. This one lady on the news filling up her car was saying that at $7 a gall she'd have to choose between gas and food. Ouch.

Would you consider dumping your gas guzzler (BMW 8 cyl, MB 8-12 cyl, Escalade, Excursion, etc) if gas hits $7+ a gallon? I'm a bit nervous about this as I'd hate to sell my bimmer and... my ... 993. My 993 gets just as bad mileage as my 01 740i BMW. I can't see myself driving a Toyota Yaris, Corolla or a Prius, but if things get really awful, we might have to.

Hoping this $7 gas situation as early as next year doesn't happen... How much do you Europeans pay for gas?

There will be WAY bigger issues if this country sees $7 a gallon gas. Like full on depression ala 1930..... I'll keep the 993 however.....

Your right on. $7 gal gas equals $7 gal Milk and on down the line. Everything runs down the road in big Diesel trucks. Bread twice as much and people won't be making twice as much.

someone on Fchat yesterday said their brother in law spends $250 bucks to fill his E class Mercedes in London now.

If gas indeed did get to $7 per gallon, I would be tempted to park my 540i and start driving my 4cyl Nissan Truck to work each day. I would never sell my 993, however....even at 7 per gallon, it would be worth keeping!

What kind of mileage are you getting that you might sell your car?

Without a computer telling me how much MPG I'm getting like I have in the bimmer, I'm guessing with my all city driving that I get around 16 mpg, about the same as my 8 cyl BMW. It goes down to empty dramatically fast, just like my BMW.

I guess I could always drive a cheap 4 cyl for work (though I sure don't want to) and keep the 993 for special, fun driving occasions. I'm just wondering at what point (what dollar amount for gas per gallon) that some of you guys would bail on the 993 experience.

Here in Hong Kong, I am paying around US$130 to fill up the tank each time.

Yea my GT3 will get 30 mpg if I put in in 6th gear and drive the speed limit. why in the HELL would I get rid of my 911? They have been paying $7 a gallon in Europe for a long time. Gas is just now approaching where it would be had it kept up with inflation of other goods over the last 30 years.
My BMW X5 gets 24 at best my wifes BMW Z4M gets 24 at best. The GT3 is the only econo box
in our family.

Gas is running about $8.50 US per gallon give or take here in Crete, depending on which octane one gets. I squeezed of 20 Euro worth, or $32 US, of 100 octane (equivelant to 95-96 octane in the States)in the 540i this week. And that only got me less than a quarter of a tank. Otherwise I buy on base at $3.84 per gallon of 95 octane, or 89-90 octane in the US.

$7 gas would still be a great bargain in Europe. Yes, if this happens, Americans will have to give up driving their big beasts or move closer to their place of employment or both. Europeans still seem to get around fine albiet in much smaller cars with displacements of 2.0L and less, or widespread use of mopeds and scooters like here in Crete.

I won't be giving up the 993 though as it is more or less a recreational car.

At $7 a gallon we'd be close to the world price average. Get used to it. We can increase supply but until we address the demand side of the equation too this problem is never going to go away.

my 993 is the most fuel efficient in my fleet - montero and F150 get about the same 15 mpg around town. Anyway, time to do the following:

1) eliminate 89 octane
2) institutionalize same formulation for all states
3) open up drilling in anwr (btw, Ive seen many wells capped in TX when gas was $30/barrel, now that its $120, cant we open them up?)

As Warren Buffett says, when the market is fearful it's time to get greedy. Someone's gas guzzler could be my next track toy.

In Canada we are already at $5.20 a gallon.
I don't drive that much in the 993, so I could care less. When our lease is up on our 4.4L X5 we are getting a V6 Cayenne.

Hell-to-the-Yes! I think fuel is one of my lowest costs! Maybe there will be less makeup applying, latte swilling non-drivers out there = more road for us enthusiasts!

I'm already thinking of when they work out the hydrogen infrastructure (best solution out there) the gas stations close and we have to buy 5 gallon mini drums at Costco!
