OT: BMW hardtop Conv. w/ MAJOR failure - Updated
This is my wife's '07 BMW 328 Conv. It is less than 1 yr. old with apx. 5k mi. on the car. She finished picking up a few groceries and started putting the top down (as she's done many times) but heard a quick grind and then pop, this is the result. She called me nearly in tears, I drove up, couldn't believe my eyes. I called BMW assist, they started to tell me that the top could be raised manually, I said "you don't understand, this top is royally hosed, I want a tow truck" they said OK. Tow truck driver on the phone tried to tell me the same thing, I told him tell me that when you see it! When he got out of the truck he said he'd never seen a top like that before! Needless to say it was towed to the dealer. I guess I get to see what BMW tries to tell me she did wrong (she pulled the button with the wrong finger???)

Oh, and the windows won't go up or down from this position nor will the trunk open. I was able to drive the car from the section of the shopping center where the grocery store is (too much traffic with too many people stopping to look at it) to a section of the shopping center where the stores had little traffic that would impact loading the flatbed wrecker.

Woh- that is crazy. Looks like a dancing bed on a minitruck or something else equally is bad. Hopefully, BMW of Nashville will take care of it with honor and quickness.

WHOA! That's sad. I'm not a fan of those and prefer the rag top or removable hardtop. Bummer for you and your wife.
I've heard of others in the BMW community with issues on the new design. I've got an E46 M3 convertible.

Wow - hope that your wife was able to get the groceries home...
I am sure that BMW will cover the repair under warranty and provide a nice loner for her

I think she pressed the 'tilt' button.
This is a 'half-cocked' job at best.
To say that you have a 'lop-sided' case in your favor is an understatement.
From now on, the BMW electrical hard top will get a 'slanted' review.
I think I'm out of creative juice. Somebody else help me out here please.

To make matters worse, yesterday was the start of that "special" time of the month so I've been walking on pins and needles around the house...I haven't been able to say or do anything right, as usual.
Oh, and today is our anniversary....
I hope BMW of Nashville will step up with a loaner by next Fri., I seriously doubt they'll have this fixed by then.

When you get it back, pull the pins and raise and lower it manually. I have done this on the 993 and it works much better. (Yes, I am joking.....) Good luck and let us know how BMW handles it. I am betting that they will take good care of you.

I got the full story from her this morning, things were too tense to discuss it last night. She had lowered the top to go to the store, then put the top up since she was going to be inside for a little while (good girl!). She did not open the trunk at any time during the entire trip, I know her, she considers the trunk for the top only. When she got ready to leave the grocery store she went to put the top down and within 4 - 5 sec she heard a quick grind/pop and this is the result.
I know my wife, she is VERY jumpy. At the slightest strange noise her reaction would have been to throw her hands in the air in panic. NO WAY she kept her finger on that switch after she heard any kind of strange noise from the top!
We'll see what BMW's reaction is. I did get 3 calls from the BMW dealer between 4 and 5:30 PM on Sat. afternoon asking what was she doing when this happened, they have never seen anything like this....

I have a friend who bought one of those cars and from day one it leaked water in rainstorms and car washes. BMW tried to convince her that it was "normal," kept the car for alomst 2 of the four months she had it and then finally took it back and gave her a 5 Series car at cost. They indicated that there were major problems with this particular model and that BMW was going to have to "eat" a bunch of them.

With all due respect to BMW's vast engineering prowess, what in the hell possessed them to design something of such galactic complexity?
This makes the 993 Targa mechanism appear almost elementary in comparison...
