I think it's funny with all the responses "more $ than brains". If you could buy this auction car new today, it sounds like the sticker would be around $115k if you believe the post. Not a great argument in my mind and a big reason why I would not buy a new Porsche. However, it makes me think of all the posts I've seen on rennlist about how great it would be if Porsche could manufacture the 993's new today and how they would prefer buying a new 993 over the current 997. A lot of that is just speculation and dreaming, but I believe there is a number of people out there that would really spend new car $ on a brand new 993 if it were available from the factory. Would these people have more $ than brains? No different then dropping $100k on a new 997 in my mind. I'd actually prefer the 993 at $100k if I had to choose.
So let's assume for a second it's not stupid to pay $100k for a brand new 993. At that point, $60k for this car is looking pretty smart to me. I know it's 12 yrs old and has 6k miles on it, but I bet it is in like new condition and I would choose it over the same car brand new and pocket the extra $40k (actually, it would be more like $55k in this example).
Anyways, I would never spend $60k for a car like this because it's not my thing. However, I can understand why someone would spend $60k on this car a lot easier than I can understand buying a brand new 997 for $100k. That's not a knock on the 997, just a crazy price tag in my opinion.

To clarify- the posted price paid of $60500 included the 10% fee - the hammer price was $55000. Add the 10% ($5500) and you get the $60500. I've been to B-J several times - it is a experience and I would recommend it at least once in any motor heads life.

I find it hard to see how the original price got to $115K, even including non-OEM stuff like front and rear radar detector.
I hope the original buyer did not keep the miles down as an investment. Cost him about $10/mile in depreciation while he drooled over it in his garage.

I might fall into the category more money than brains. Unfortunately, it's clearly a shortage on the brains side more than an excess on the money. With my current 401k balance, my brain is playing catch up. However, I'm pretty stupid leaving my money in the market, so we have a bit of a stalemate going on right now.

I think that this was a fair price and all of our cars should be worth at least that much-or at least the ones with engines from Porsche of over 4 liters. And I second the thought that going to Phoenix during January is a must do for any gear head.

I have been watching the BJ auction for a couple of days and I heard the announcers say that the lower price cars start out the auction first and as the days progress the very high end cars conclude the sale. The car was probably an average car. I didn't see it, but that does sound like a great price.

And that is only the beginning. Having run a '61 Roadster (ex Parade winner) through there some years ago, I can tell you that there are many adders on top of that. Want to be on the block during one of the "feature days", when many more bidders are there? Pay a "day fee". Want to be on the block during a "prime time" of the day, when the bidders are up and the hangovers are wearing off?? Pay a "time of day fee". Want special prep, etc., etc., etc., yep there are more fees. And if you don't happen to live next to West World, or whatever B-J site is being used, figure in transport (and back to you if it didn't sell when there were reserves). We used to figure in 12-15% as what we needed to realize over a market sale.

I sometimes like to tantalize myself with thoughts of 356 ownership...

Keep the article and when Statefarm or some other insurance co tries to give you 12,500 to total yours whip it out... or just go with collector car stated value insurance.
