I've decided to use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. I can pick it up for cheap at Costco in large jugs.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about - it's just a car after all.

There are classic threads on this-including one that has gone on forever. I switched to Brad Penn racing and have been pleased-also an article in Pano a couple or three of issues ago on the Porsche take on the issue.

I think his point might be the last post by the owner re. Pennzoil.
Though I am not sure why you'd see a crack cyl liner... unless of course you went the Andreas route mentioned above
Seems like one of the "one in a million" M96 engine issues, no?

I guess the oil is a possible contributor.

Porsche and engine failure is a scary thought. I can only recall one engine failure/complete rebuild on the 993 section which is reassuring.

There is no denying the lack of engine-failure threads on the 993 board. On the other hand, this seems almost a weekly occurrence on the 996 board.

Yikes.

I like my old-skool junker.

I saw a blown engine at my neighborhood wrench a few months ago. It wasn't pretty, and it was a track car.

NO! BAD IDEA! The trans fats will clog the oil arteries and risk one massive engine stroke (as opposed to lots of little strokes). If you care about your engine use ONLY trans fat free vegetable oil!
