Default Best route from Sacramento to Crescent City??

I will be traveling from Sacramento to visit friends in Crescent City (and ultimately on to Brookings, Or.) next week. Google maps suggests hwy 101 out of the San Francisco area. I would have thought that taking the 5 further north before heading to the coast would be faster (fast is better than fun on this trip—SUV).

Route suggestions from those familiar with the area is appreciated.

I think it is Hiway 36 out of Red Bluff over to the coast that is hundreds of great turns!

Edit: did a Google search:

Yes, 36 does look like a great drive. But as my 993 will stay home, I wonder if 299 might be faster/easier in a truck....

I think 299 is your only realistic route. Now, if the weather is going to be bad, maybe the sure thing is 20 around Clear Lake and join 101. More civilization along the way in case something happens.

Thanks, Ken. I didn't consider 20, however, I seem to recall my dad using it as his usual route. I take it that you would consider 299 as the faster alternative?

Many thanks,

Should be less miles. But if there's weather through there, can't tell you at all how much that would slow you down. Have not run 299 in over 10 years. And that was at a brisk pace in a 911!

Bill- We run the Mendocino coast. Only one Hwy Patrol per 90 sq miles.
Sac to Ukiah on Hwy 20 is 3 or so hours. Ukiah to Crescent is around 3 1/2 -4 more.
Sac to Redding is 2 or so. then another 4 more to Crescent. But hwy 299 and 36 could be slow if the snow level is below 4000'. I find hwy 20 boring. 299 is beautiful just watch for the weather. Good luck
