Default Photos: 993 C4S v 996 C4S

For those still vacillating between a 993 and a 996, I thought I'd post some recent photos comparing details on both models.

BTW I'm not posting these photos in the 996 forum, so you can guess where my allegiances lie.

What's the regulations in Singapore now? I thought previously all cars that were older than 10 years old had to be scrapped or sent out of the country?

You need a permit, called a Certificate of Entitlement (gotta love that name) or COE, which is valid for ten years, in order to register or use any car in Singapore.

COEs for new cars are auctioned off by the Government in an open bidding process every two weeks or so, according to a pre-set quota that accounts for very slight growth in the car population and adjusts for cars that are exported or crushed/ scrapped.

Current COE prices are about US$11.5k for cars below 1,600 cc and US$13k for cars above 1,600 cc. Historically they have ranged anywhere from US$140 one year ago to over US$70k in the heady days of the mid 1990s (there was a fluke US$35 result in 1998 under the original closed bidding process).

To keep a car that is older than 10 years old on the road, you need to "renew" your COE by paying the Prevailing Quota Premium or PQP (we love our acronyms), which is the average of the last 3 months of new car COE prices.

Note that at on or before your car's tenth birthday, if you export or scrap your car, you will get a refund of part of the taxes that were paid when the car was registered when new. If you renew your COE, you forgo your refund. For example, the refund on my 993 C4S would have been US$75k.

This effectively encourages folks to export or scrap cars, keeping the car population relatively young (something like over 80% of cars here are less than 4 years old). For this reason, it's mainly really cheap cars (low tax component) or really desirable exotics that get their COEs renewed.

Default AMAZING!

The photos, the cars and the color! What color blue is that C4S? It is about the hottest looking 993 I have ever seen.

Yeah, might be interesting to see how objective (or not) the responses would be.

It's L39C on my option code sticker.

I think this is known as Midnight Blue Pearl Effect or Midnight Blue Metallic.

The codes L37W and F8 also seem to be used interchangeably when referring to this colour.

Excellent pics! I also like that Audi Quattro back there.

I just moved back to the states after living 2+ yrs in Singapore; beautiful city, but car prices are crazy there - for the price of a Toyota in SG, you can drive a Porsche here.

Hope you enjoyed your stay nonetheless. Everything is relative I guess. Eating out isn't expensive, nor are short holidays in the region.

Great pics.

Looking at the first pic in the series, the only design elements I really object to in the 996 are the porcine doors. Yeah, I know it's a throwback to the 356 design, but here it detracts from the rest of the car's lines, which in and of themselves are fine.

After looking at your pics, I had to go check the garage to see if my car was still there ..... it is not often one sees another in midnight blue pearl.

As much as I adore my C4s, for $US 75K recycle rebate, I'll plaster it in stamps and mail it your way ......

Cars can only be imported if they're less than 3 years old or over 35 years old -- the latter can be brought in under the "Classic Cars" scheme, but usage is limited to 28 days a year (using some coupon system). Another bunch of rules designed to limit the growth of the car population...
