I'm with JoAnne and JHummel68 on this one. Lets just say there were lessons learned and no one got hurt or went to jail.

Was driving my first 911, a 1980 911SC Targa, back in 1990. Was getting a lot of wind noise from the top, so I figured it wasn't seated right. Stopped at a light, unlatch it, light changes, guy behind me starts honking, so I hold it down with my left hand, while shifting and steering with my right, figuring, what the hell the rear pins are holding it in, I'll just pull into the next side street and latch it down.

Get up to about 35 mph, and suddenly the top is just sucked out of my hand. I'm watching in the rear view mirror as it sails about 25 feet into the air, turns over lazily, takes a hard BOUNCE on one side, then skids down the road like a hockey puck until it winds up in the gutter. This is in traffic, how it missed hitting anyone, or anyone hitting it, I'll never know.

I pull over, run and get it, it's all dented. I stuff it into the back seat, and head for my mechanic's.

"You'll never guess what my wife just did," is the first thing I say.

He gives me a narrow look, grabs a big mallet and pounds it back into shape so it fits again.

.. Was parked in a parking lot about to drive out after a meeting.. looked around for any of those cement parking blocks, but the lot didn't seem to have any.. drove forwards and up and over one, (which was hidden from view as it was directly in front of me..) which mashed the plastic rocker panel and the front jack point.. took it into a body shop and had a new jack point replaced as well as the plastic rocker panel..

FWIW, a new targa top from Porsche is over $20,000.

I know they're over $20k for the Carreras. I'd be surprised if the price were drastically different for an SC top.

However, Dan Petchel of Cars inc. can make a targa top look like new for $1k.

The dumbest thing I did with a 911 was a long time ago when I was so clever to buy one 5 months before I had to come forward
as a candidate for my divorce.

One of the much more enjoyable dumb things I did in it was to look for a shortcut in the higher mountains:

But the best dumb thing was when there were no hotels or anything else there:

Targa tops looked much different in the SC years.

Dumbest thing was running from the coppers in my 993 and lost him only to be caught a few minutes later because of the neighbors pointing to where I went. Still didnt go to jail and am currently on a deferred. Gotta be good for 12 months then the fun will start agian. I mean the dumb will start again.
