Can anyone identify this engine part? Is it a chip of some type?

its a front/rear system. Tells you where they are comming from.

You have one just like it in your front bumper cover too.

Does the K40 work against the current stuff police are using...laser etc.

This was built in by the PO when I bought the car 3 years ago but I hardly ever use it.

Hmmm...that sure is a weird place for a radar detector sensor.Interesting choice by the previous owner. Behind the engine lid? I doubt that it could be doing its job correctly tucked in there. Wouldn't have made more sense on the rear window, or underneath the rear bumper?

FWIW, the plastic part the sensor is attached to is known for cracking and breaking away into a big chunk that gets sucked in by the fan. I would relocate this sensor somewhere else if I were you.

I'll second the dumb placement! Why not in the bumper cover?

No, it will not do laser in the engine bay. You need line of sight for laser, & of course a laser sensor.

Too much heat under the rear cover as your cats are right there. A more comon place is on the heater blower housing, Just above your moble1 decal.

These where big in the mid/late 90's. The car/audio techs would install about 2 a day on new cars before delivery. That and LoJack.

I never saw that sort of thing in my previous 993 and it had a K40 installed when I bought it. The PO told me the rear sensor was inside the rear taillights/center reflector, although I never looked for it. The front one was in the front license plate frame which i dismantled and hard mounted under the front bumper.

Hey Rome, you got an answer! That was the first thing I spotted when you opened your engine bay.

Hey, BTW, does anyone here have an engine lid that springs all the way open when you pull the release handle? I was standing next to Rome's engine when he pulled it and it freaked me out because it opened all the way up on its own power. Mine just pops up a little bit and you have to lift the lid yourself.

Hahaha, and look at the time stamp!!! Didn't we say that you'd get an answer on Rennlist within 15 minutes?!?!?!? That's awesome!

And it was great meeting you in person, and thanks again for finding my car for me at Holt!
