OT - tire recommendation for Audi A4 '99
hi guys,
As I trust the opinion of the 993-gang,
Can i get some opinions for the best all-season tire for a 1999 Audi A4 2.8?
The car is used in NYC and CT all year around, but mostly on weekends.
Is there a good value tire that is similar to the Sumitomo tire that has impressed most people on the 993 forum?
thanks

well...Nokian makes a helluva good all season-my wife pulled off the craptastic oem rubber on her new mazda CX-7 and put them on.
We've run Nokians exclusively as winter rubber here in central New York, for decades...there simply is no better, longer lasting winter tire, PERIOD.
Their all seasons still have the severe weather rating, and perform great in all weather. They are not cheap, but all around great tires. My wife has run the all seasons on her last two vehicles.
you didn't say if the A4 was a Quattro?

Hi Rob:
We've got Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S's on my wife's A4, and Yokohama Advan A8Z's on my Subaru.
We're real happy with both brands. I don't recall the cost of the Michelin's, but it wasn't bad, and the Advans came with the Subie as original equipment.
We get a bit of ice and snow up here, and both tires work well, and are quiet.
My tire guy, who is a client, says about 30% of his Audi customers instal snow tires, turning them into "snowcats".
There are the usual criteria that apply to selecting an all season tire: traction, cost, noise and tire life, being the major ones. With an AWD car, my main issue is noise at highway speeds.

I have Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S on my current 2003 A4 Quattro and have been very happy with them. We don't experience the winter weather that you do but the snow, slush and rain we do have doesn't seem to cause any issues for me on a long daily commute.

As you know, the A4's are excellent winter cars. A buddy of mine, who does a lot of skiing, actually runs his A4 Avant year round with high performance summer tires.

I would suggest going to tirerack.com and do some research. I've made several decisions based on their tests and been pleased. Talk to Damon there, he hangs out here too and will answer questions. I bought the Pirelli Zero Nero for my 325iT based on their reviews, they are an all-season I believe. I put a little more weight on TR's test results than on their user feedback section but it all helps. I didn't like a set of Sumi IIIs I had on my DD although the Sumis work great on the 993.
