Emergency Engine Lid Release
This morning I installed an emergency engine lid release behind the left rear tail light. Its more convenient to put it there instead of behind the wheel arch liner since I only need to remove one screw to get to it.
You will need some single thread steel wire, something to use as a handle (I used a plastic 'O' ring) and some wire ties.
First remove the left tail light. Now you look inside the housing ceiling near the center reflector. You should see a small rubber lining.
Push the steel wire around this lining and it will exit into the engine bay close to where the primary release tube is. Extend the wire along the tubing towards the release latch.
The release latch has two holes, one of which will already be taken by the primary release cable. Push the wire through the second hole (as shown below) and wind it back and tie it off to itself, making a loop.
Use the wire ties to secure the emergency wire to the primary tube (not too tight since the cable has to move).
Attach the handle to the end at the rear tail light, reinstall the light and your done!
p.s. I also attached a small fishing sinker to the end of the primary cable in case the screw on the latch ever lost its grip on the wire.

Great job, this should be done on every 993 that didn't come with it, IMO.
I used the emergency cable from Porsche, part # 964 512 521 00, it was less than $10.00 and is the same as the front hood release loop cable. Hope I never have to use it!

I'd hate to think how one would get the engine lid open without a back-up release.
This was my solution...
I got most components from a bicycle shop:
1 - bicycle brake cable.
1 - bicycle cable casing (in Speed Yellow) cut to length by user.
2 - bicycle stainless steel cable casing ends.
2 - rubber caps (optional).
4 - cable ties (in Speed Yellow).

You can adjust the latch and the cable tension. I also glued small mid-density rubber bumpers onto the rear deck lid to provide a little squish/tension/rebound.
