State of California is broke and they are trying hard to squeeze all of us hard to collect money.

Effective immediately, if you do not stop at the red light, be ready to pay $436 in fines or if you pass a school bus with flashing red signals, you will be charged $616. The state of California is going for blood, so be extra careful in driving, you cannot afford messing with them. I have been hearing that Highway Patrols are under pressure to issue a lot more tickets than last year with at least 30% increase in fines over 2009, so beware of radar guns, highway and traffic cameras installed everywhere and the tougher enforcement of parking rules.


Just for your info, the next time you park in the handicapped zone, even for a minute, you will be looking at almost $ 1000 in parking tickets , so it'd better be worth it.

California needs money, so pay close attention to the rules of the road!

Just plain ridiculous..I got a ticket last year for doing 10mph over speed posted (3 lane highway, speed limit 45mph everyone does 65-70 all day, was going 55mph), the ticket was $60-70 but after adding up court fees it came out to $330!! I have more respect for a bank robber than this government.

If it wasn't for one of those bozos, I would have never ended up with a 993.

The above three are far worse than going 20 over, yet the fines are less or in line. Go figure. Do you think the mobile phone industry lobbyists had something to do with it?

You and me both. I've hardly used the bike since getting my 993. This was the whole premise for getting the P-car, and I'm actually surprised how easy its been to transition over. Guess I was ready.

Use of cell phones in cars without hands free handsets should be banned, full stop. Every State should be following the lead of NY.

I've never been to California so my opinion doesn't count but I don't have a problem with the big fine for passing a school bus with flashing red signals.

Is hands free really that much of a panacea? What I really object to are the few folks who clearly can't walk and chew gum at the same time trying to talk and drive. Whether handset, headset, or passenger, the distraction exists. Having said that, I am by no means advocating banning the use of cell phones by drivers, for most folks can handle it. Texting while driving is another story altogether - very few people can text without looking at what they're typing.

So what's the point of the thread? That people should be upset that they can't run red lights or pass stopped school buses on the cheap anymore?

Aside from speed limits which I think are archaic, why not fine people enough money to where they'll think twice about running lights and stop signs and texting and yelling on their cellphones.

Accidents are caused by crappy and inattentive drivers and they should be fined heavily for driving crappy and not paying attention.

And that's the reason behind speed limits, too. Crappy drivers who can't drive fast and pay attention at the same time.

I'd personally rather live where there is some design on traffic flow and accident reduction and enforcement of that design. Living in the Wild West on my horse was too stressful for me

In theory, I agree.

But the reality is most cops exploit traffic rules to increase revenue these days, not safety. Otherwise, the punishments for texting would match those of a DUI. I guess the wireless phone industry has more money to throw at the politicians than MADD.

And although it's not PC to say so, all the DUI "don't drink and drive" BS has little to do with safety: there were only a few hundred deaths in CA last year because of drinking/driving. It's all about the tens of millions of revenue it provides for the State, nothing else.

If those fines bother you don't move to Finland, they base the amount of the fine on your income. IIRC not long ago the CEO of Nokia was facing a five digit speeding fine.


I'm actually OK with these fine increases as long as they are enforced fairly and uniformly. It's when the troopers stop some speeders at 5 mph over and then later don't stop others going >10 mph over that I get upset.

That's the law in CA too. In addition drivers under 21 can't legally use cell phones at all, hands free or not, and texting isn't legal while driving for any age driver. Doesn't mean people don't still do it though.
