The ftech9 isn't better IMO because it's solid state, but the lightweight solid state implementation should take away the cause of failure of the factory piece. Since everyone should carry a spare DME there's no real downside from a bad choice other than maybe the $25 extra for the f9 piece was wasted.

Coincidentally I emptied my glovebox to do some work and found that I've squirreled away 3 spares over the years. If you're not already carrying a spare DME, PM me and I'll send you one.

This is a Porsche, not a Ferrari.

Don't tell the 993er who gets the spares that they were from my 944.

The original in my 993 tt was a 944 part. I think they all were back in the day. I changed mine out as cheap insurance with 2 replacements costing around $55 C. Not sure if this is true but read that the Hungarian ones are the most durable because they use leaded solder, banned by the climate fraudsters in Germany.

Same in my 1995 993. I still have the original (date code 210295) in my car and it was made in Hungary. But the original solder joints look as though they were done by someone who knew nothing about soldering. They sort of look as though someone moved the joint while the solder was cooling down.

Anyway, after the fix some 10 years ago, all the joints are smooth and shiny.

Never had a problem with the 993 dme relay but in the 944 it's a different story. It gets bloody hot and dies, I think I have about 6 spares, you name it I've got it, different manufactureres inc SS. Fingers crossed I've cured it. High resistance in the fuel pump circuit causing increase current flow in the relay. Cleaned earths, Live feed contact to fuel pump and the fuel pump and filters, dme resolderd.
