New Tire Recommendations
Guys,
I'm not trying to start a whole tire debate, but could use some advice for my specific car. I haven't put tires on it since 2007 and don't know what the 'hot' setup is now.
Current tires are Bridgestone S-02A's. Front are 2004 vintage and rears are 2007. Front are 20% worn, rear are 50% worn.
My specs:
- Front 225/40ZR18 - Rear 265/35/ZR18
I only drive the car in the summer and about 3,000 miles per year. Never in the cold and only in the rain if caught. Price is not as issue. I want a fun to drive on twisty's, quiet, sticky and high performance tire. I don't care about the wear life.
Suggestions? I was thinking about the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2.
Also, if anyone has a good home for the Bridgestone's they are welcome to contact me. No charge. I can ship them but would prefer a local pickup. The tires are perfect - cosmetically and no patches on any of the four.
Any help would be appreciated.

I went with the michelin pilot super sports.. so far so good, even in the cold + rain (i recomend driving in these conditions to practice sliding\drifing the car :P)
For your old tires - I would recycle them.. rubber has a 4-5 year shelf life before it starts getting brittle. Tires are the most important part on your car!

Get n2 pilot sports 2's-I put a new set on this summer and was very sad to put on my winter tires! But I can wait until spring. Awesome grip! Pricey but worth every penny!

BFG G-force KDW's. Nice and grippy when dry but good in the wet also-on the odd occasions I get caught in the rain.

In the situation you have described I would get sport cups. I used to have them on my 996 and drove it in the summer only. The few times I got caught in the rain they were fine as long as there was not standing water.

I am not a fan of too many wet and dry tires other than Bridgestone.
Here's why- Large tread blocks, smooth slipping and soft composure when regaining traction. Wide deep water channels and near solid band of rubber on outside of shoulder for responsive cornering. Plus the sidewalls clean easy without a lot of detail like Good Year for instance.
Also liked the Dunlop Star Spec, but wet roads were a bit more tricky.
Might be a good time to check out the new S-04s!

Good to hear from you, Mike.
I just put Pilot Sport PS2 on my car. For me - and with due respect to the other well-made brands - I've always found Michelins to be tops in build quality. As well, as a company, they seem to value a progressive breakaway at the limit, which many tires don't. Those other tires may be faster in steady-state cornering, but the confidence provided by the Michelins has always featured in my decision-making.
I know Michelin is advertising the extended tread life of the Pilot Super Sport but, to me, they seemed closer to the Pilot Sport Cup and, thus, not optimal for my intended usage, which sounds pretty similar to yours.
So far, the PS2s have been a pleasure to own. Quieter than the Pilot Sports they replaced (which, like your tires, were simply "aged out"), decent grip, predictable breakaway. Not cheap (about a grand at Tire Rack) but, so far, a satisfactory choice.
Regards to all.

Hello David and thanks for all the responses.
I am really leaning towards a Michelin tire, I have had such good luck with them on all the other cars I've owned. I would have bought Michelins the last time around but the PS2 was no yet available in my size.
I will never wear the new tires out - I would replace them for age reasons before that happened. This has been the case with the Bridgestone's - which are a fine tire but I think lend towards a pretty harsh ride.
I am not an expert on this and would appreciate any help - especially any experiences with the PS2's.

I tend toward Bridgestones but that is strictly a personal preference. The S-02's's you are taking off are a very old design and anything new is probably better.
IMHO, if you are not going to track the car, all the tires mentioned are excellent. The PS-2's, Super Sports, and the new S-04's would be my top 3.
