Not sure if anyone's already posted a thread like this at the beginning of 2012 but I thought I'd start one up if no one had. This post should not include mods, only maintenance and service costs. I'm not a DIY'er of course so my costs would be at least twice as high as many of you that work on your cars. (My car has around 90K miles now and I just had that service done in addition to replacing valve cover gaskets, spark plug wires, differential service, new tires, fixing a no-start situation that was on-going)

My 993's 2011 costs of ownership were $4957 from my indie. This includes about $30 in parts I got from Suncoast through the mail. That seems like a lot until I divide it by 12 and think of it as a car payment. At $413 a month to drive a beautiful 96 C4S that most non-Porsche people think is relatively new, it's a veritable bargain. It didn't feel like a bargain owning it this year but in this monthly payment context - a very sweet deal. My car insurance is less than $500 a year which seems like a steal for me and that is extra on top of the $4957.

Insurance for me is only $1058 a year for both cars from Geico (not included in the maintenance #'s)

The 2011 costs of ownership of my 2001 BMW 740i sport were $1433 from my indie/Exxon station. That car only cost $119 a month to own last year (plus similarly cheap insurance). An incredible bargain.

As a pair, they cost $532 a month, about the price of a new BMW 5 series lease. I would much rather have driven the 2 cars I did than a BMW 528i for this past year.

I'm also a non-DIYer, and 2011 was the least expensive year of ownership in the 7 years I've had my car, probably because I didn't have a maintenance service due in 2011, and very little need for repairs, thank goodness. It is my daily driver, and my car has 85K miles.

Everything, all in, including gas, insurance, registration, parking fees, etc., everything, it was right around $7500. My car insurance is about $1700/year.

About $1200 was repairs: a new starter motor installed, a new rear tire and also a burnt out tach bulb and bad window switch replaced. That's it. Maintenance was about another $200 or so (oil change, etc.).

Gotta love a well maintained 993 and it's return on investment, dollars per mile and smiles wise

Sweet - only $1400 for you last year then for maintenance and service. That's a whopping $116 a month for a 993 (plus insurance, etc. but you'd pay for that on a lease, too). You could barely lease a Hyundai Accent for that amount of money.

A whopping $385 for parts plus another $457 for full-coverage insurance.

That got me:

• replacement Beru ignition cables
• distributor drive belt, gear pin & O-ring
• 2 Bosch distributor caps and 2 Bosch rotors
• 2 hood & 2 engine lid gas shocks with 4 retaining clips
• 2 remote batteries

I am looking at about 10kyear! Thanks steve! I just bought my second 993 this year. 1st trip to indie was roughly 2500. Valve cover gaskets etc... 1900 for bbs lm wheels. 2700 to my door for walrod bushings and pss 10. 375 Wong chip. 180 new blaupunkt to me. Rennline strut brace.
18 twists with ps2 $800. Fister stage 2
Another set of used Hoosiers.
300 for bumper painting and êtte delete. New rear clear fender protectors. Rear window rust repair $1400. Please do not add! $200 misc parts from sunset. Plus about 1k for pss install and alignment This proved every good 993 is a 40k car.

Its only because part of the year, there is only fire & theft coverage on it, otherwise its $802 for the full year.

Similar to goofball, this was one of my lower year for costs. My 2011 total was about $2,600, but $1,800 of that was for an optional stereo/speaker upgrade a la Rod Birch. The other $800 got me an oil/filter change, new battery, AC recharge, and a few new electrical switches, and some extra belts in case of an emergency.

Since we're throwing out insurance numbers, I was just quoted ~$520/yr upon my renewal.

Aside from insurance and garage, my maintenance expenses for the year were about $400. Three oil changes, six filters.

Very interesting thread.

I was wondering if in addition to the main cost of ownership (incl. maintenance and repair), we could separate out the regular maintenance/service costs.

I just bought a 98 cab, 63k miles which i had a 60k service by the seller. I since replaced the alternator, fixed the upholstery, roof cover, replaced belts,...need to replace the distributor caps,.... but i plan to follow the advice of the 993 companion and redo an extra 12.5K service to ensure everything is ok.

So i would be interested to see how much you pay for the 12.5k service, 60k,... and if it was indie or dealer.

I got off easy this year. I only drove about 3 K in the last year and have just over 142 K on it. Other than insurance and gas, my cost was ZERO. No problems what so ever. As soon as I get a garage built, the motor is coming out and at least the top end is getting done. That will bring up the averages a bit.

$0 for me other than insurance $ - pcar was driven less than 500 miles. The alternator did go in October, so that replacment cost will be about $100 when I ger around to it.

My ownership costs boil down to annual maintenance and whatever I elect to spend refreshing various aspects of the car.

Although I am fastidious about record keeping (and maintaining a 993 folder) I've never felt the urge to tally the associated costs.

It continues to be extremely reliable and a joy to own. Selling it is not an option.
