Default Door compartment

I just noticed the plastic is cracked by the screw in the front of my driver side door storage compartment. Any suggestions besides superglue? Thanks.

This is very common on just about all the 993s. If you do a search, there are several repair options. I made a small plate out of aluminum to reinforce the plastic. Attached it with rivets and contract cement.

Do a search on this forum for "broken door pockets" and you'll see some fixes some have come up with.

I have the same issue. I was going to try fiberglass/resin with a washer embedded. Then sand smooth and repaint.

The last time I had my door trim panel off, I took some measurements and had some thin stainless steel sheet cut to make plates that should fit the surface area perfectly (I have yet to install them). I then punched holes in the plates for the screws. The plates will be bonded to the back side of the door panel using JB Weld.

This is what I'm talking about except I used aluminum stock. My current pockets needs this fixing but haven't gotten to it yet. Did it on my last one a couple years ago. Will see if I can find some pics.

I had some ABS plastic clips that were used in some packaging I received and glued them in place using ABS cement. Real solid now.

I use 2 part epoxy for a number of things, fixing the door pocket was one of them.

Here's the thread with a pic of my repair (post #5). Next time I did this I painted the plate black to blend in better. The repair was still holding strong two years later when I sold the car.

Relatively easy to do and seems to last. There are other solutions but this worked for me. As an FYI, this plastic is PVC based if I recall and when I was patching it I used a very thin plastic cement to glue it as best I could first. It's called IPS Weld-On #3 and described as "clear, water-thin, very fast curing solvent cement". Then did the aluminum reinforcing plate.

I get the glue from TAP plastics, don't know if they are national or not. This glue is fantastic for gluing acrylic based plastics (which is used a fair bit on our cars) because it works on a capillary method. You put just a little on with an eye dropper or syringe, let the glue flow along the break and then press the pieces together. You can literally see the plastic melt and squeeze out of the seam. Takes a couple of hours to really set. One caution, don't let it run down your plastic piece because it will leave a white chalky stain.

Hi
I made some aluminum strip about 20 mm (1 inch) shaped it to the plastic, drilled a hole to suite the existing hole, painted the outside of the bracket semi gloss black and the used 2 part epoxie to glue it in.

The passenger side had not cracked, but I made a bracket for it as well and attached it, it was easier to make two at the one time and not have any further issues.

If you look in the pocket now it is all but impossible to see this mod, actually it looks like a factory upgrade for a later model door packet.

Thanks,

I have to find out if Lexan can be glued to the existing plastic panel.

A thin piece of "black" Lexan would be perfect. Lexan cannot be cracked or torn.
