Default Need advice on this Alum/Leather Shifter

So I bought an Alum/Leather shifter and discovered this anomaly. This picture shows the leather boot inverted. The hold-down screw area has a broken weld. The shifter rod goes up inside the shifter **** a good 4". How crucial is this screw? The installed shifter fits fairly firm but I just fear they may separate during one of my spirited drives with fellow rennlisters TIA

With out the screw it will rattle, & drive you NUTS!!!!

I say this as my shifter set screw just loosed up the other day, & I tore the **** off for the drive home, after 10min, I could not longer take it.

too fix the rattle, you can use some dental floss, and just put it between the alum and the leather.

I wouldn't want my shifting compromised by a **** that slips at the wrong moment. Perhaps not a concern for normal street driving, but during a spirited sprint, AX or especially in a DE/TT environment....

Perhaps some JB Weld can get things back together.

Nam,
Looks like the seller somehow forgot about that botched weld job.

If you can somehow separate the steel inner sleeve from the plastic body of the ****, I will gladly weld the retaining nut correctly. Otherwise, I fear the heat may wreak havoc on the surrounding plastic.

So far it's been holding up to my shifting, but again I haven't had a chance to drive it like I stole it.
