Luckily I was just approaching a gas station and coasted in.

Is it the Alternator Belt? I presume the belt closest to the fan is the fan belt (engine cooling) and the one that swings out to the right of the engine bay is the A/C belt? You can see the shredded belt to the right of the picture...



Anyway I had it towed to the garage to have all of the belts replaced tomorrow, front end raised slightly and the fuel tank taken out to figure out if the fuel smell is the tank (we've ruled out hoses and expansion tank).

That is the alternator belt that broke. You may want to check the others to see if they need to be replaced also. Looking at the fan belt, it might need to be replaced. I'd do it for peace of mind.

Thanks! Yes, for sure all of the belts will be replaced as a safety precaution. The fan belt is badly cracked...you can see the crack line clear as day in the picture at 1 o'clock position.

Man, you can't seem to catch a break with that car (no pun intended). The good news is that replacing the belts is super easy and it's advisable to carry a set of spares just in case.

they are insanely expensive to replace. Mine whined like mad, this winter I removed it(single 5mm allen IIRC) and simply soacked the tension wheel bearing in lubricating oil again and again. I've driven about 3k miles so far this season, and it's whisper quiet.

i got my car about a few weeks ago.. how do i know when the belts will need to be replaced? the belts on my car currently has "porsche" markings so i can't tell if it's still the original belts or they were replaced with oem ones.

Argh...tell me about it. I just can't get a break with this car! Oh Oh Oh and today was +46C!!!!

She sits at 55,500 miles or 89,123 kms.

I'll purchase extra belts and the fuel relay to carry around.

In my brief 6 months of ownership I have encountered so far:

1. A/C Control Board replacement

2. New Battery

3. Fuel smell that leaves me stinking of fuel and a slight headache (we've taken off all of the hoses and inspected them, replaced all fuel gaskets, removed the expansion tank and its fine, inspected the neck area for overfill and dampness (nada) now we are removing the fuel tank and see if there's a slight crack or anything where vapour would get into the car)

4. Replaced fuses and weird starting and stalling issue has gone away on its own?

I love the car regardless.

Had a guy walk up to me today at the gas station while I was waiting for the recovery truck and he asked if I'd be willing to sell it...NOPE. I can easily make $10k on this car above the mods as these cars are so rare in this market however, she's, as my 2-year old daughter Cielle says "Papa's Car". She loves it. Constantly hounds me to go for a ride...how cool is that?

Check for fraying and cracks in the middle of the belts, that's usually a dead
give away that you need to replace them.. Also, if they have a shine to them
they're glazed and need to be replaced.

"While you are in there" you may want to consider doing the pulley update. This was discussed at a 993 Tech Session at Tony Callas' Rennsport. Here are my notes:

This is for the outermost pulley on the alternator. The factory-installed pulley halves are thinner than the replacements. The original ones can break, and the pieces can dent the engine lid. Text from Porsche Tech Service Bulletin: When installing the new version pulley halves on the 911 Carrera and Turbo, the distance spacer is machined as part of the new version pulley and is no longer required. Because of this, it is no longer possible to store adjustment shims behind the distance spacer on the outside of the alternator pulley. Shims removed during the tensioning procedure should be stored in the vehicle tool kit.
