Will Durametric reset a 993 airbag or not?
Hi
I swapped my steering wheel over for another (Atiwe) wheel a while back and have had the airbag light on since. I remember that I accessed the airbag through the Durametric 964 menu (my car is a 1994) and did communicate with it. A fault came up as bad earth. I have been reading on the forum that the Durametric will not actually be able to reset the light. Is this true? My brother is having a look at it later today and I do not want t waste his time. I am abroad so cannot do it myself.
It has not been an issue up till now because the engine has been out. Now its back in I want to get the car MOT'd in time for my return. I have one week to drive it before I go back abroad so I'd love to help my bro get it ready.
Many thanks
Berni

Hi Guys
Thanks for the response. He seems to think the wiring is fine, but there is a spare wire that needs identification. I have started another post to see if anyone can help. It is a red or orange brown one that comes up from the column all by itself.
The Durametric website seems to be down at the moment.
All the best

I have three Atiwe/FVD 340mm wheels in my 993's. I have never set off a CEL light on any of the installations. If you installed it properly there should never be a Code light to turn off.Did you unhook the battery for the swap? Are you certain you replugged the clock spring in?I don't do much DIY stuff, but a steering wheel swap should be no problem. For the rest of you: How can you tolerate having a CEL light on for years? You ,most likely, have been driving around with an inoperable airbag system to go along with your
CEL/Airbag light. Do you have both OBD1 and OBD2 scanners?

This may or may not help, but the airbag control module was upgraded to a 996 part number at some point in the 993 model run. When I used the Durametric to reset my code, I believe you had to use the 996 menu.
Good luck!

Hi Matt
Thanks for the information. For my early car I definitely use the 964 menu on the Durametric version that I have. Nice and confusing! I am wondering if I damaged something when I did the swap. It was all a bit tight as I remember.
Seeing as my engine has been out for a year the airbag light has not been worrying me, and I would have attended to this a long time ago had I actually been driving the car. I did have a virtual drive yesterday with my brother after he refilled the gearbox. I was on skype via his iphone on the dahboard lol

Hi
Rats that's a good point. The wiring should be the same though at least. I did read on the Durametric site that the software works the same regardless of locale.

I was not able to get mine to reset a year ago at an indy shop that knows what they are doing. Tried several times with a Durametric. I had failed to properly connect the wire and it fell out during installation....didn't discover it until I turned on the ignition.
Finally ended up going to the dealer for a $110 reset!!

The Durametric will read the airbag codes. I don't know that there's a reset. If the fault
Is corrected the light goes out in my experience. There may be faults i have not seen that must be cleared.
The airbag module is very easy to damage with any kind of voltage spike. Jumping the car with a power pack for instance.
I you have to replace the airbag control unit it will have to be programmed by the dealer. The Durametric will not do the programming function. At least for the 993/996 controller. Your's may be different if it has the 964 controller.
