My DIY rear facing infant seat install for 993
Hey folks - follow along my rear facing infant seat install for the 993. People said it couldn't be done. I say you are wrong!
This will be updated, including all of the pitfalls, as I complete the project.
Here is what you need:
1 Chicco Keyfit Infant 30 car seat base
2 Rennline Harness Door Side Mounts
http://www.rennline.com/Harness-Moun...ductinfo/SA03/
These mounts are for 5 pt safety harnesses and should be perfect for keeping the baby safe and secure. Oh, they are $36 each.
1 Strap (still searching for a custom length 2 pt lap belt - I think a Simpson will be cool).
My baby is due August 20th and I really want to have the 993 (owned since 2006) be the transport. The 993 is my daily driver and will continue to be until I find a nice low mile e55 wagon!
FYI - don't hate. Yes, I understand it is a baby and modifying your car to support a baby seat can be dangerous. I am not going to put my baby in harm's way and will have it checked by the local fire station. Also, do this at your own risk.
Last, this is for a 1995 C4 Coupe.
Step 1: Remove the current seat belt mounts
Using a 17MM ratchet wrench, I removed both of the passenger side rear seat belt bolts.
Step 2: Attach the mounts
I used Rennline's SA3 safety harness mounts.
For the tunnel side, I removed the stock seat belt attachment all together. It got in the way of the baby seat. I replaced it with the SA3 mount using the enclosed hardware (Bolt, washer, grommet, o-ring, mount, spacer in that order). The mount comes with the instructions and I followed that order, using the small spacer and not including the stock seat belt hardware.
For the door side, I kept the seat belt attachment and followed the SA3 instructions to a "t". Use a 17mm ratchet.
When I was done, it looked like this.
Step 3: attach the infant base (coming soon).
I am still in process of locating a nice 2 pt safety lap belt. I spoke to a Simpson customer service rep and they may custom make one for me. I will keep everyone updated when I find one.
When I am done, hopefully the install will look like this. I like Chicco as an option because it has the smallest volume of most car seats plus it is super highly rated.

That's how many (myself included) put in the forward facing seats. Are you giving up the passenger seat then, as it will likely have to be tilted forward?

My wife has the Chicco in her car. I couldn't get it in the Porsche. With the three point it flopped around and the latches were too long. So you are planning to use a strap? That may work. I like the mechanism that seat has for clamping the belt.
Do you think a crotch strap would work?

My 993.
"Child seat" is called Britax Hi Way in Sweden..
Hopy you can have some idea of how we have done.
Mayby not the best for the passenger front seat, but what the heck, it´s for a summer or two...and I´m always driving, so my misses will sit tight if she want´s to follow us

This thread brings back memories. I had an Audi TT when my son was born and used to slide him through the rear hatch to get him into his infant seat. When my daughter was born I realized I had to sell the TT because there was no way to get two little ones in the back and for me to drive. So I bought a 993 as my personal car and an old Land Rover as the kid hauler.
