The "what's it worth/thinking of selling" BS
Anybody else getting a little tired of the recent threads with titles such as What's it worth?, Help Value my car, Thinking of selling my xxxx 993, and a host of other thinly-disguised fishing-expedition-like titles?
With all due respect to people who do this for legitimate assistance, it seems these threads have become increasingly frequent. The rules dictate anything being sold here must list a price. I can't help but think that many of these threads are initiated with the author knowing full well that by posting under the "thinking of selling" or similar banner, they can then sit back and enjoy his or her own private auction.
To those long-standing members who have sold their cars here with a proper, honest ad, including price, I tip my hat to you. That kind of up-front attitude is what brought me here in the first place. And to clarify, I have absolutely no problem with a member listing an "ambitious" or high price, at least a bar has been set. The market will then dictate if the car sells. Not every car sold here has to be bargain-basement priced.
In short, and in my personal opinion, this is not ebay.

I somewhat agree with you. There are those members that are uncertain of their car's value, and like to know what it is worth, and there are ones who knows and see if there are "big" fish out there willing to pay an arm and leg.
I made a mistake on my first 993 C4S. Although my car had a little more miles (80K) than some C4S around, but what I didn't realize was all the upgrades, maintenance items it had. Aventurine on cashmere interior. The interior was mint! Options included stainless door sills, aluminum dials, rear wipers, CD changer and two sets for wheels/tires, both hollow spokes. Upgrades included RS mufflers, PSS9s, top end done/all maintenance items done, new brakes/rotors, tires, 2 owners and spotless body. I sold it for $33K to a gentleman in the UK!!! I wish I had posted a "thinking about selling my C4S" post!
Even now, with my C4S, is my speed yellow with sport seats and RSD consider more than other C4S with lower miles, say 30K or 40K miles (vs. 64K)? Again, I have many upgrades, yellow seat belts, 993TT aluminum shifer, Fister II, strut brace, etc... Maintenance like top end, brakes, etc... done.
Just not sure....

Agreed. It's just an approach to drum up some pre-sale interest, stringing people along only to usually post an unrealistic asking price down the road. Afterall, who honestly doesn't know what their car is worth/what they need to get out of it?
For me, it is always better to focus on sellers who have already made up their mind to sell, are serious about selling their car, and have posted an actual asking price...in my opinion.

I agree with your general feelings about those "what is my 993 worth" threads. But it can be entertaining as well and it gives me something to poke fun at too. I vote to keep them around and have at it when they appear.

See it a ton. Just peruse any other forum here. Even happens with wheels, parts, etc... Very annoying. Sell it or stop playing games. Douchebag says what?

With rare exception, I view that type of post as some kind of warped search for attention and validation....They post that they are considering selling their 993 and then everyone on the board is supposed to remind them about what a great car they have and beg them not to leave the fold of the "true believers." When I see this type of post I think of Stuart Smalley on SNL...But that's just me I suppose.
