I can't imagine being subject to only a Porsche or Fister in-cabin speaker... Yikes!

How about they just get a CD with all the sound (or maybe old Steve Miller Band or Steppenwolf recordings) and then they don't even have to start the car!!

The new BMW M5, a 100K car, comes with BMWs "Active Sound Design" that pipes in exhaust sounds through the speakers. Weird.

I think I heard of this from some of the rice-rocket tuners - get your Civic to sound like a Ferrari. I have not personally seen it, but for electric vehicles I can see it being a hit for some people. I also heard you can do other engines like those on F-18's, etc. :-)

I removed the noise pipe from my MkV GTI because I thought it was stupid. I ended up replacing that with one from a Tiguan 2.0T which didn't have the bung for the noise pipe.

Even in racing , where they use diesel engines (24hrs, rally, ..), they already use artificial exhaust sounds....

Mike, you are thinking of the SoundRacer product from Australia:

http://www.soundracer.se/?p=98

From the audio on the website, it sounds artificially produced...digital synthetic sounding. It plugs into the cig lighter and broadcasts to an unused FM slot on the radio.

I am sure the factory ones are better sounding. I guess the upside is you can feel like a hooligan inside your car without causing noise pollution...

I bought a Soundracer as a gag gift for a car collector friend who bought a Fiat 500. It works off the electric pulses from the alternator so won't work on an electric car or hybrid. It was a fun gag but a loooong way from being convincing. It also only works with the radio tuned to a vacant channel. Hard to believe that manufacturers are going to start to use something like it but stranger things have happened.

I used to use clothespins to hang playing cards on my bike... hitting the spokes made it sound just like a motorcycle... to my 9-year-old ears.
