^^ so true, and thats what it boils down to and why they take advantage us. if i posted what i went through to haul my 6' to 12' windsurf boards, sails, masts, and gear, it would raise some eyebrows like your 993 bike rack, im with you! theres just no way around it.

racks are a gigantic waste of money. but there are no other viable alternatives so your pretty much hosed when you need one. when parts break, and theyve discontinued your line, and you have to replace all the components for the same end result, you get boned again...

I have an extensive rack system on my other vehicle. it serves its purpose, but there's no doubt i was flushing money down the toilet and enriching Thule Execs....

only hope; craigs list, ebay and a prayer

Guess we're back to having activity on this. I've been 100% Yakima since I don't know when. Still have (and use) the original gutter mounts, cross bars, and ski holder from purchase #1. Still have (and no longer use) the fork clamp holder. I bought the '92 C4 in '98, and I honestly don't remember if I bought the rack prior to that for use on an Audi that was my beat-around car.

Anything I've gotten to "upgrade" has worked just fine with either of my wife's BMWs, or to still use with that original gutter mount. (Well, 50% of it, as I finally did get the tall mounts for the rear last year since I couldn't let Magdaddy out style me.)

I put mine together with the Yakima Hi-Rise kit, and just pulled the spacer blocks out of one pair to use in front, then made a tire carrier out of inexpensive ATV ramps. I was about $230 all-in, got the Yakima stuff on eBay and the ramps and a few nuts and bolts (necessary after removing the spacers) at Lowes. Rock solid setup, and I like that the bases are composite rather than steel. Tested with 4 wheels/tires to 90+, no problemo.

I saw these being advertised. I'm skeptical...
