Default 400mi thus far, alrighty then, what happened here?

Welp, I've just spent too many hours bonding w/ the neu acquistion (finnnnallllly), and found 'this' (invisible to you, visible to me).

WTF happened har?

OK, 'har' being it's 2:15am and I didn't grab the camera - but - har is the rubber boot-thingamajig atop the rear fan shround (dead center of pic / dead top of fan / dead under rear edge of intake mani)... looks great in ^this seller^ pic...

...and now...

...has a 6" oval missing from it, exposing the fan.

Looks like it ingested itself during 400mi of Paul'ing?

I touched it and it's brittle goo-like and either tears / busts off / gooifies to the touch...

ASSuming this is a normal wear-item that just bakes due to age / heat?

Almost (almost) seems it'd be better to have the ginormous hole in the top thar... air forced thru the decklid would seem to best feed the case from above....tho contrarian thought would be the fan is exhausting thru the top hole.

I don't see how the fan could preside over the positive pressure coming 'in' @ speed tho...

Bueller?

Do a search for "fan shroud" and then call sunset imports. ~$40.

Just replaced mine last week.
Routine (plasticy) part that takes a lot of beating up - heatwise. No biggie.

Yup, that shroud on my '95 started disintegrating maybe 2-3 years ago. Replaced it and all is good.
BTW, huge congrats on the "finally" ...it's a great feeling, isn't it

LOL. This happened to me right after I bought my 993 a few months ago. It seems to be some kind of rite of passage to have that shroud fall apart.

When you install the new one, remember that you just have to loosen the bolts holding it in. Do not take them out. I used a heat gun to soften the hard plastic on the edges of the plastic shroud to make it easier to slide the shroud under the bolts before tightening.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Good to hear I'm in good company 8-).

Yeah Edward, it felt great finally getting to fingerbang her a bit - I'd not had 2sec's to go thru it and bond w/ what I'd got yet so this was excellent.

Learned alot about what I got myself - and no real surprises, a really clean solid car.

I'm looking again @ the hole in the shroud and it still seems that the hole is probably better to channel air over the case from the decklid - it really does. I'd assume Porsche would have done that if it were the case tho... I'd think. Still odd.
