Default Mystery rubber thing - anyone know what it is?

Found this in the front trunk area of my 993 - near the top edge of the carpeting (but under the carpet) on the passenger side. It is made of a very soft rubber. Anyone have an idea what it is and where it goes? It was loose when I found it.

I think I have seen this question about 5 times in the last year.

Its for the ends of the weatherstripping that runs across the front upper trunk. its a weird design - its not glued in and tends to fall off.

Cheers,

Mike

Probably fell off when the hood shocks were replaced in the car? Looks like there are drain or weep holes in it. A well engineered chunk of rubber!

Thanks Mike and Harlan - any chance you guys have a diagram or something for where it goes? Are there supposed to be 2 of them?

Yes, there is one at each end of the rubber seal. The round portion of the bit you have slides into the hollow of the rubber seal.

That seal is the one that runs across the car in the luggage compartment....between the gas tank/firewall and windscreen. You'll see a plastic tray just behind it.

Thanks guys. It is back where it should be. It appears I am missing one however. Is this important enough to order another one or just let it go?

order it, it directs water away from your trunk and into the appropriate drains

The two end caps help provide a tight seal and separate the forward and aft part of the trunk. Basically it's the dividing line between the trunk and the environmental part of the car's cabin. Put them back in. A small dab of silicone seal/glue will keep them in place.

Care to explain the mechanics of this from your vast 993 knowledge? Maybe show us on your own car? You do own a 993, don't you?

perhaps I've overstated its importance here.

But, if you look at it, there certainly appears to be a drain tube, no?

Mike cap, welcome to my ignore list.

Before you put me to your ignore list (which you promised to do previously), why don't you post a gallery of your 993 pictures for all the RL brothers and sisters? I'm sure we'd all love to see your ride !!

QC, that "drain tube" as you call it slides into the ends of the rubber seal that separates the luggage compartment from the area behind it. The actual luggage compartment seal (above the mystery rubber thing in the pic) runs along the whole perimeter of the compartment opening.

That "tube" in the mystery rubber thing probably allows the air to escape when that seal is compressed during hood closure. Have a look.

As for the mystery rubber thing itself, it completes the seal to the edge of the body and main compartment seal. If you check, you'll see the edge angled to conform with the hood lid...Porsche goes overboard when it comes to detail...typisch Deutsch.
