Hard to say with conclusion, but it appears to be a head gasket failure which is fairly common, more so on MY '97/98 and many problems associated with weak factory head studs that stretched IIRC. There's a factory TSB on it around here somewhere ....
I believe you will have to pull the motor out and replace the gasket .. and depending on the condition/mileage on the motor, at that point, you might as well do a top end reubuild ... valve guides (known problem) and valves .. rings .. etc. I'm sure some others will chime in here that know more than me about these circumstances.

I have never seen a 993 cylinder fail without reason, hence I think you might have an oil leak from one of the crankcase through bolts rather than the cylinder itself. This requires the engine removed and a top end rebuild to repair.

Let me know if you need help, I could do with a relaxing week in Barcelona......

Clean the oil off the engine, then take it for a short drive, then inspect it. At that point you should be able to see where exactly the oil is coming from.

Hello,

if you like to get closer to this Problem, you need to pull the engine....

To answer your question about the engine rebuild DIY, here is a link:
http://pcarworkshop.com
There is a section in there on an engine rebuild.

Not really. That there is oil accumulating in that spot is clear. And that's about all.

Unfortunately, this is likely where things are heading if you want a thorough diagnosis. In the old days of a carburetted, or even an mechanical injection, engine, you could pull the intake and fan shroud for further inspection. But that took you as long as pulling the engine, so what was the point.
