Do I need to carry a spare DME relay? (noob)
Complete noob question... I just picked up a '96 C2. Do I need to carry a spare DME relay in the car, just in case? If so, I assume the car won't start (won't crank? fails while running?).
Thanks!

Yes
Also get a set of spare belts or use the recently removed belts as spares. To make this work you need to also keep a triple box Allen to hold the fan pulley and the correct wrench etc. it's one of those things that may never need to touch but better safe than sorry. I keep this stuff in a small box in the frunk with some add oil

Replace the current DME relay and carry a spare.

Yes, because the solder joints on the circuit board fail, sooner or later. Things never change...when I worked for Volkswagen back in the 70s and 80s, those relays were a hot seller.
You can re-work your original DME relay, and if you do, chances are very good that it will never fail. I reworked mine and I trust it 100%.
And since these relays take up no room, carry a spare and get an original Porsche part.
BTW, the newer DME relays are slightly different internally, but I have my doubt as to how much better they are.

Post #36 in the above link shows the new "993" DME Relay. The original relays started with a 944 part number.

I've had 2 993s and have driven them since 1995 and never had a spare, nor has the original part failed. Of course, it won't hurt to have one.
I guess when the trunk is forward it's referred to as a frunk. I can't tell you how many times I've had people ask me if I need help when I'm loading the frunk. They all think that the engine is up there and the only reason to have it open is when there is something wrong with the engine.
