Default OT: trip to Switzerland ideas

Will be in Lucerne on business next month and want some ideas on taking train ride/excursion after business portion of trip. A rennlister once posted trip ideas a few years ago, but can't seem to find in search. Sorry to bother you but all suggestions welcome. Thanks

If you're willing to travel a bit...

1) Glacier express from Brig to Zermatt
2) Ferry from Lausanne to Evian

If you get Geneva way take a car trip to Yvorie, France. It is a walled Medieval city around the bottom of the Lake. Very picturesque, some nice restaurants, very photogenic

Take a train south to the JUNGFRAU REGION. Stay in Grindelwald. Absolutely beautiful!
http://jungfrauregion.ch/en

While there take the train to the top of Jungfraujoch at 11,388ft. An amazing train ride THROUGH the Eiger. Bring a jacket!

Rent a car and drive over Susten Pass.

Please feel free to PM me questions.

two words
Lauterbrunnen Valley

A spectacular place near Interlaken.
Beautiful views of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Maunch.

Wingsuit BASE friendly

Try to spend a night in Grindelwald or Murren.
Murren is very nice with views you will remember the rest of your life.
Bottom photo taken from my hotel room.

Have fun.

Here's my European trip, exactly one year ago, featured on Megadeluxe;

However, I do have many more photos on another forum, I don't know if its appropriate to post the link.

-Rent a car and do a loop: Susten, Gothard, Nufenen, Furka, then home.

-Titlis (Piz Gloria)

-Eiger Bahn

-If the weather sucks: Transportation Museum in luzern. Great way to spend a few hours.

Switzerland is perhaps my favorite destination anywhere. The country is incredibly beautiful and the people so friendly and organized. Keep in mind the saying "Swiss On Time", which means 5 to 10 minutes early.

From Lucerne it all depends on how flexible you are on the transportation aspect. I've not much experience with the train, more with the roadway network.

As has been mentioned, Interlaken / Kleine Scheidegg and the Eiger / Jungfrau is truly amazing with the cog railway to near the summit. It's close to where you will be. Thin air, and a cool restaurant at the top for some Wurst and Beer. Ice caves up there, walking on the glacier...

Here's the station at the top - incredibly cool place:

Plenty of good ideas already. Lucerne is very pretty and the whole Vierwaldstättersee/Lake Lucerne area as well. A boatride on the lake would probably be nice I think they still have real steamboats with paddlewheels on the lake.
While Switzerland is tiny for you Americans, some places that were suggested in the Berner Oberland or Geneva are actually not that close. Depending on how much time you have, I'd stay nearby. Some suggestions can be found on this website: http://www.luzern.com/en/
If you have a few days and would like to travel a bit, the Lago Maggiore and Lago di Lugano are worthwhile. And I am a fan of the Gotthard/Andermatt region.

LOVED staying a week in Murren (no cars) and adored Lucerne (I second going to the Transportation Museum) and Zurich. I really like big cities, and country. The Alpin Palace Hotel in Murren wasn't that expensive and had the most amazing views.

The thing is, whatever you do, you can't go wrong.

Hey ! I discover this tread today! As stated, there are many places to visit, 1 question, do you have enough time? :-) You ll rent a car? (There re nice mountain roads, but be carefull,on the motorway, lots of radars : / ) Otherwise the train is also a easy solution..;-)

Indeed the Berner Oberland is very nice, Grindelwald is lovely. Gstaad region also. Near Luzern, a must do is a tour on the 4 Canton lake, Take a visit to the Titlis, then a small trip to Zug, wich is a nice region landscapes.

I advice you also to visit the Valais region where the Matterhorn is located: http://m.valais.ch/en/

Another nice place to visit:

Hope this help! You can send me a Pm if any question! Enjoy.
