Oil leak, what's this part
Hi,
I have an oil leak on my 993. Oil drips on the ground only when the car is in a slope.
The leak seems to be from the part in shown in the picture below. What's this part? Is it an easy fix?
BTW, this clean car is not mine...
Thanks!

Common oil leak spot. Those are the chain housing covers. Do a search -- lots of threads on this. An inexpensive repair; you should do the valve cover gaskets while you're in there.

These are a bit difficult to get to with the engine in. Some people have had luck just replacing the rubber washers on the nuts.

Be careful with this. People think its just the timing chain cover gasket but sometimes its actually the camshaft seal behind it. Cam shaft seal is a much bigger job and requires the engine to be pulled and timing to be reset (ask me how I know).

you might get away with changing the rubber seal on the fasteners pn 964.105.140.01 apon install torque to spec
if not then its the gasket --> 964.105.181.01 or possibly more internally

I had a bit of weeping at my timing chain covers, so I just ordered a bunch of the rubber grommets and replaced them. Was a bit of a challenge to get to, but not hard at all. Cleaned it all off afterwards, then took a 1500 km road trip, and have driven around another 500 kms since...no more weeping. The grommets are so cheap that it's worth a try IMHO. I purchased my grommets from AutohausAZ as they were like $0.53 or something like that.

I have already the rubber seal of the covers and as well the rubber grommets plus the hats and bolts ready to do that job. I think it's the culprit of the oily smell after I run the car in a sporty way. I think I'm going to dissamble the back and not turn down the engine do this job in my 993tt.

Finally, I just bought the valve cover gasket (upper and lower) with the 38 bolts and the chain cover gasket set... Anything else I should add?
Seems like a lot of 993 had to change theses parts...

Do I need to change the oil and the oil filter when changing the valve cover gaskets? And should I change the cover itself too or the gasket should be sufficient?
