Odd then that Tony Callas, as part of his program at Tech Tactics yesterday went out of his way to talk about how air cooled engines do NOT retain their heat post-shutoff, especially as compared to "water" cooled engines. And how that played into the difficulty meeting cold start emissions requirements.
Maybe the cover also helps keep the engine warm for cold start emissions - have not thought of that angle.
Do you know if Tony actually instrumented the engine to get that fact?
Cheers,
Mike

Funny all this discussion of removing the panel here on this forum.
Porsche built the 911 for almost 30 years without the panel and are any early 911 forums discussing adding the panel?

Interesting, 930.119.007.01 is for Switzerland and Australia only, I haven't seen one in the USA.
I haven't looked that hard either I must admit.
However, only specifying the part for those two markets points to a noise control purpose in my mind.

Maybe we should do a quick survey, I will start a list, this is only from what I have seen on the cars that have come to the shop which is a relatively small sample (and are no means completely factual - this is why I am asking for input for US/Canadian cars):
1964-1989 911's
The noise argument does make a bit of sense, since the water jackets on the 996 definitely quietened the engine.
Cheers,
Mike
1964-1989 911's
- no engine trays
1989 - 1994 - 964's- one piece tray from the transmission nose to the muffler, sealed in with side boxes and insulation, removable with multiple 10mm bolts
1994-1998 993's- Separate transmission tray and engine tray, each removable with phillips speed connectors
1998 - present- no engine trays
The 996 and 997's for instance, at least the ones I have had on the lift, have no engine trays - and the engines are not really any aerodynamically more efficient than the air-cooled, so having the tray for aerodynamics does not seem to play here. The noise argument does make a bit of sense, since the water jackets on the 996 definitely quietened the engine.
Cheers,
Mike

For whatever it's worth, I live in the Phoenix area. Summer temps, and I mean you almost wish you were dead temps, run 112-118. Never considered removing the tray. I'm just being afraidy-cat. No need to risk injury by taking off equipment.
Ran fine. No heat issues. But it was a "dry heat". =)

From what I can surmise from this thread, the top uses for the tray are:
1. noise reduction
2. preventing fires when driving over piles of leaves
3. protection from abrasions/oil drips
4. preventing leaves from entering AC towers (thanks, Steve)
5. inspiring 6 pages and counting of discussion/debate on whether to run with one or not and/or what Porsche actually intended when engineering the tray in the first place.

I used the zymol strik and most of mine is off. I have some still here and there, ive been working at it here and there. The engine and related are all clean now though! Of course its still in pieces too. :/ But this spring it will look great!
