I just use Brad Penn. Better yet, call Steve W and see what he says. I always follow his advice. That said, I'm sure most of them mentioned are fine.

per Steve W's advice...1100 ppm ZDDP levels, redline blue label is 1200 ppm , M1 15W50 1200 also, M1 20W Vtwin is above 1500...don't know what motul ZDDP levels are but word on this board is, it is an excellent oil.

That's very nice (perhaps too much information), but what do you use in your engine?

The 993's factory Porsche AG oil fill was/is Mobil 1 15/50.
During the dry hot summer weather of western Colorado (Vail) the slightly modified version of Mobil 1 20/50 Vtwin oil get's the nod.... The preferred elevated ZDDP levels are meet with both Mobil 1 oils ... more so with the Vtwin M1 20/50

Greg, you might ask Richardew who has 311,700 one-owner-miles on his 1996 993. Not bad for an engine that has never been opened up.

To quote him:

The first 5 years or so I changed oil every 5000 miles and my oil consumption was less than 1 qt/5000 miles. I never added any. I believe that the dealer was using vavoline synthetic oil. After 100k I figured I was going to keep the car and changed oil every ~15,000 miles. The dealer I go to now uses Mobil I. I'm burning a quart every 3-4,000 miles. I usually buy Mobil I 10W40 or 15W50.
And he even did that with the engine tray on since day 1.

If you'd like to read the whole thread, here is the link.

Smile Heresy, Heresy!!!

LN Engineering partnering with Raby Engine Development recommends Joe Gibbs Racing Oils (JGRO). Check them out on the LN Engineering web site. JGRO has a high zinc formulation for older air-cooled engines (Is the 993 an older engine?), in 15W50. www.lnengineering.com/oil.html , a mere $11.61 a quart + shipping.

For 996 racing motors, Joe only recommends his XP9 race oil. But spend it is, $17.00 a quart X 12 = $200 for your oil change + 2 filters, ouch! But, what if the oil saves the engine???? Now the oil is amazingly cheap.

Confession, I bought the 15/50 JGRO, two (2) cases, paid $131.88 a case of 12 + shipping, or $10.99 a quart. I may be going to the XP9 Racing Oil. If and when this happens I will put the 15W50 up for sale, on Rennlist of course.
